Mr. Gibson grew up on East Blvd. in Dilworth, North Carolina and attended Charlotte schools. He graduated high school from Carlisle Military Academy. He also attended Clemson University and Belmont Abbey College. Porter combined his natural gift for art and drawing with his talent as an amateur golfer into a lifetime career of land planning and golf course architecture.
Over the course of his career, he worked with several great golfers, including one of the greatest golfers of all time, Sam Snead. From 1958 to 1960 he designed courses for the Sam Snead Golf and Motor Lodge Company.
During the 1960's he designed for the B & G Construction Company.
From 1971 - 1974 he was a partner with Bob Toski in the golf design company Tait-Toski-Gibson Inc.
After 1974, Porter Gibson set up hos own independent course design company.
Along with Bob Toski, they were among the first golf architects to use waste water irrigation systems for golf courses. At the time, this was considered revolutionary but his outside-the-box thinking is now something that is done quite regularly with golf course architecture.
He designed and built golf courses up and down the East Coast. His Carolina courses include Deer Track Plantation at Myrtle Beach, Santee National in Santee, SC, Woodbridge Golf Course in Shelby, NC, Westport Golf Course in Denver, NC and Mallard Head Golf Course in Mooresville, NC.
