Detailed description of Rancho Canada Golf Club, East Course, CLOSED 2017

Rancho Canada Golf Club is a Public, 36 hole golf facility located in Carmel, California. The facility has two 18-hole golf courses. They are The West Course and The East Course.

Both courses were designed by Bob Putman. The courses opened for play in 1970.

Rancho Canada's two 18-hole courses meander back and forth over the Carmel River. These mature venues were once a prized portion of a 4,366 acre California Rancho named, "Canada de la Segunda."

In the tradition of great golf courses, both layouts are unencumbered with real estate development so that you can enjoy Rancho Canada's gently rolling fairways and pristine greens framed by the Santa Lucia mountains and stately trees.

East Course __________

The 6,125 yard East Course is more a matter of skill than of length.

The East Course starts out like a lamb but then builds in intensity to a back nine that presents some of the most challenging holes on the peninsula. Players must conquer the river five different times, including on hole #13, a 192-yard, par 3, requiring a carry of nearly 200 yards to an elevated green that's cradled at the base of the Santa Lucia mountains.  Hole #18, a 403-yard, par 4, is even more difficult because it's uphill all the way to a well-bunkered green.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees, the course plays to 6125 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5278 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 16, a par-5 that plays to 580 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 17, a par-3 that plays to 118 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, a 472-yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Rancho Canada, East Course is # 17, the 118 yard par-3.

The course closed on New Year's day, January 1, 2017.

Played here is a scramble so it is hard to comment on pace of play. Greens were bumpy (typical poa) making it difficult to read putts as the ball would often take an unexpected turn. Some fairways were OK but as with many CA courses the effects of the drought are starting to show. If you are in this area go to Bayonet/Black Horse for a much better golf experience.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Worse than average course for the area, Better courses for less nearby

The course was in nice condition: fairways were good and the greens were very good. The biggest drawback to this course is the somewhat weird layout. Most of the holes are pretty typical par 3's and 4's, but a couple of the holes are so tight and obstructed that hitting a ball that can be found is mostly a crapshoot. Maybe playing the course again would help. Overall, though, I enjoyed the round and would play here again when I was in the Carmel/Monterey area. The course is certainly a better value than nearby Laguna Seca.

Excessive river crossings from greens to tees. Excessive length grees to tees on some holes. Has more forced carries than the adjacent West Course.

The foggy, cold afternoons in the summer are the biggest drawbacks to this otherwise good golf course. Temp. high 50's, overcast.

Have played it for years - is a good "local" course - course it's not Pebble, one of our neighbors.
