Detailed description of Chester Washington Golf Course

Chester Washington Golf Course, previously named The Western Avenue Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Los Angeles, California.

Chester Washington golf course first opened for play in 1927.

Chester L. Washington Golf Course was one of the first public golf courses in Los Angeles to allow blacks to play. In 1982, the name of the course was changed from The Western Avenue Golf Course to Chester L. Washington Golf Course. Mr Washington was a prominent black journalist who died in 1983. Mr. Washington was editor in charge of the the Los Angeles Sentinel, the city's largest black-owned weekly. He was also a civic leader.

Chester Washington Golf Course, with its rolling tree-lined fairways and subtle breaking greens, offers golfers of all skill levels a challenging day of golf. Conveniently located near downtown Los Angeles and the LA Airport, this par 70 layout once hosted the Gardena Open. The course offers a fully stocked Pro Shop and a beautiful driving range.

From the back tees the course plays to 6,348 yards. The longest hole on the course is the #12, a par-5 that plays to 480 yards. The shortest hole on the course is the #10, a par-3 that measures 134 yards.

Watch out for # 9 a par-4, 432 yard challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. #4 is a 144 yard par-3 and is considered to be the easiest hole on the course.

Some of the fairways were seriously lacking grass. Really thin lies. Food and staff were very good

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

The course gets crowded Thurs-Sun. I play in the early am so I can get in a 4hr 20 min round time. Staff is not very nice (American Golf corp. - They have been told, but Hay, it a corporation.) They will take $$ to slip you in before others. Tee times always off, never on time. Course layout sucks for fast play. Short par 4, par 3, Par 4, Par 4 and then a long par 4. So moves after 4 or 5 hole. This course needs money through at a re-design. Greens are usually nice condition. Fairways not terrible but so so. Carts are nice. Ambassadors do nothing to speed play up, really the waste money for the golf course. Driving range so so. No grass to hit off, only mats. Pro shop small, need s a Rodger Dunns there. Do not need a LA Rec card to get on or make reservation, which is good, but bad because of the impact on play. Better then Alondra and Victoria golf courses, just by a little.
