Detailed description of The Crossings at Carlsbad

The Crossings at Carlsbad is an 18 hole public golf course located in Carlsbad, California.

This course first opened for play in August, 2007. It was designed by Greg Nash.

With the Pacific Ocean to the west and the Southern California Peninsular Mountain Ranges in the distance to the east, this state-of-the-art, 18-hole championship municipal golf course and event facility offers visitors magnificent views and a natural environment.

Developed and owned by the City of Carlsbad, this public course is nestled among more than 1,000 acres of Carlsbad's coastal terrain and natural habitat. It's home to wetlands, sage brush and other plant, animal and bird life.

Named for the five bridges - or crossings - that were designed into the course to meet existing environmental and topographic conditions.

The course is a par 72. With 5 sets of tee boxes, it can accomodate all skill levels. The Black tees are set at 6,835 yards, Blue at 6,467, White at 6,020, Gold at 5,685 and Green paly to 5,030 yards.

Fun, and challenging course. Distance is good for only select holes....otherwise...a good score is based moreso on course management. When the wind blows in..... watch out!

This track is both very challenging and quite enjoyable. Was initially resistant to drive 30+ miles to play there, but awfully glad that I did. Great views, interesting layout, and demands consistently accurate shots. Overall a good value at $65 (I would hesitate if I had to pay more, though).

We played this course because it was selected as one of THE places to play in southern California. I really think we spent more time driving between holes than playing. Overated in my mind but the great proshop staff was nice enough to give us San Diego County rates. I like to play different courses so if i am in the area I again I would choose another course.

Overall was a little disappointed with the course. The layout is fun and challenging and felt there was a good mix of holes where I could break out a driver and rip it and those where you had to think about club selection. I also like the scenery and lack of houses around it. But the overall condition of the course, especially the greens, was not what I would have expected for a track of this caliber. They were a bit beat up and inconsistant. This might have been due to the rain that they had that moring. The fairways were mushy in some spots and dry in others and not what I would have expected for a track like this. We paid $55 weekend twilight, which I think was a fair fee. I believe the morning rate was $95, which is way too much given the overall conditions. I would play this course again, but not go out of my way to do so.

We played The Crossings while on a vacation to Del Mar. The course was in great shape and was fun to play. Of course, it probably helped that I played the round of my life (shot 85)! The layout was very unique and it could be challenging if your shots are not accurate. We will play again on our next visit to the area.

Course is very scenic with lots of elevation changes and some carries over arroyos and valleys, both off the tee and on approach shots. Some of the greens are pretty severe, but fair if you hit to the correct part of the green. Consequently, pace of play is slow and the course is tough for high handicappers. If you can get past the slow play, it's a great value, particularly the twilight rate. The one other drawback is the in-cart GPS system. It is a different model than I had ever seen before and was virtually invisible in the daylight.

I live close and play this course all the time. If you are local and a member of the Crossings Club, the rates are unbelievably reasonable for such a quality course only 3 years old with spectacular Pacific Ocean views and GPS in the carts. Even if not, the regular rates are not outrageous (like La Costa or Aviara). A lot of people complain about the greens on this golf course but I think they are just big babies. yeah there is mounding, multiple tiers, and undulations; but the greens are massive - if you don't want to have a double-breaker from a different tier than the hole, then hit a better shot. What do you expect when your approach shot is still 60 feet from the hole? If the greens were flatter and smaller then you'd probably be in the bunker or rough with that same approach. Also it doesn't hurt if you actually learn how to read greens. As some others have mentioned, there are some quirky holes. If you're one of those guys that just absolutely hates a golf course because they have a par 4 that you can't hit driver on, then stay away. Personally, I feel every good golf course should have one nice par 4 like this. I mean, what, the other 9 par 4's plus the 4 par 5's don't give you enough time to stroke your new R11?

It is a very unusual layout, but I really did like it. Maybe it is the uniqueness of it and its challanging aspect. But I guess the best way to say it was I had fun!! I have to say it is like no other course I have ever played. I live in Carlsbad only about 5 minutes away from the course. So that probably influences this last comment. I will definitely play again and in fact will join the Crossings Club to take advantage of the cost savings it offers

Just plain fun. Up and down makes it tough but the wide fairways offset this somewhat. Definintely would like to play a second time when I know the course a little better. Course was in great shape in July when played. Some of the longest cart drives between holes of any course. Not walkable.

I love playing this course. It is difficult and challenging but fun. Have had guests golf with me as well, both advanced players and hackers. Better course for knowledgeable golfers. Otherwise slows the place down. Price is right and the guests from Washington want to come again and bring his Bro to play. He was very impressed and is a member of Olympia in Wash.

A new course built by the City of Carlsbad. Every hole is unique and challenging with the back nine the toughest. As with any new course there are some growing pains but as it matures it should become a fantastic golf course. Hopefully the rates won't rise as the course matures. Residents play for $60 weekday and $80 weekend. County residents are higher and out of county are really high ($110 weekends) Those of us who live in Carlsbad and nearby cities hope it remains affordable. I highly recommend playing there as the views are fantastic and the clubhouse and the staff are great.

This is a tough call. The hole designs are pretty interesting, the price is competitive - locals get a slam dunk greens fee rate and visitors aren't soaked. The clubhouse and staff are superb. The design of each hole is not bad. The greens are rediculously mounded and crowned and pin positions near the edge of the greens make scoring impossible for the average player. One par 3, I hit to within 8 feet of the hole and mounding carried my ball 75 feet to back of the green where I promptly 3 putted. On another par 5, I hit a high arcing shot to within 12 feet and ended in the rough 75 feet away because of mounding and roll. Too penal. The mounding on the greens need to toned down a bit because the quality and speed felt like we played Augusta at Master's time. The single biggest issue on this course is the course layout. Driving between some holes is unduly long. In fairness to the designers, the course meanders through a large tract of environmentally sensitive land. Therein lies the difficulty of rating the course. The experience certainly removes you from civiliation for most of the holes. The driving makes walking impossible. If I had to suggest and make mods to this course they would be: 1) consider a reroute to reduce driving 2) reduce the size and mounding on some of the holes. Good shots need to be rewarded. Too many designers are concerned with building in gotcha's and the average player just gets unduly penalized for not hitting a perfect shot. I'd play this again but I don't recommend it for beginners or corporate outtings. This is a challenging golf course for the serious, low handicap golfer.

Bottom line: Better courses for less nearby, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Very new course. Extremely difficult. Overall conditions were excellent. Don't bother if you are more than a single digit. Johnny Miller would hate these greens...unbelievable slopes and humps. Bunkers are like hitting out of wet powdered sugar. Come see where the city of Carlsbad spent 67 million!!!!!!!!! Better yet, save yourself the punishment, and play Aviara instead.
