Detailed description of Bayonet-Black Horse Golf Course -The Bayonet

Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course -The Bayonet, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Seaside, California.

With 7,104 yards of oak and cypress-lined fairways, Bayonet Golf Course was designed in 1954 by General Robert McClure, the Commanding Officer of the post at that time. Gen. McClure, a left-handed golfer with a severe slice, designed the course to fit his game. This is evidenced by holes #11-15, a series of sharp doglegs, widely known as "Combat Corner." Notoriously known for its magnificently manicured, long, and narrow fairways, Bayonet is one tough, but rewarding 18-hole adventure. With four sets of tees, the course is a par 72, with a slope of 141 and a rating of 74.8.

The Bayonet course is situated on some of the most picturesqe land as there is. The day was perfect and the track demanded my full attention. I didn't give it on every shot, try as I might, but escaped all but two of the well conditioned bunkers. The greens were rolling quick and true. No need to give your putter that extra "umph". Really, really nice. Beer and bite afterwards. Tasty and well prepared. Great time !

This used to be one of the best-kept secrets in the Monterey area. I have played it several times and it is a great track. Black Horse is equally challenging.

I was very impressed with the new layout. Less impressed with the homesites for sale signs and orange plastic fencing that seemed to be randomly placed off the track. Greens were very fast and subtle. Rough a little inconsistent and thin in places.

The re-modeled Bayonet compares favorably with other great courses I have played for layout, green/bunker complexes and overall conditioning. The course really felt like a US Open quality course. Spyglass,Bethpage Black, Winged Foot, Riviera or Olympic were no more challenging or even better maintained than Bayonet on the day I played. Considering the green fees are $100 ( $60 for seniors), Bayonet is a must if you're in the Monterey/Carmel area. On my next trip I will play the Blackhorse as well.

Remodel has gotten rid of the few "silly" holes making this a great course...challenging but fair. Practice facility may be the best in the area. Highly recommend this as an option/addition to anyone here to play the courses along 17 mile drive.

Course was in great shape ...especially consdiering all the rain, drainage was excellent! Long course, pretty open, bring your power game! Views of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary from afar are great. Will be back!

Paid only $65 (incl. cart) on a holiday w/ a coupon. Not sure I would pay the regular rate of $160. Good challenge, fairways were in good shape and greens can be tricky with lots of subtle breaks right around the holes. You really need to practice good course management playing this course.

1) Stay in the fairway, the rough is tough.

2) Greens are still in the early stages and need time to mature. The ball will not stick and rolls off which makes for a challenging mind game.

3) The fee I paid was using the course associate membership rate structure.

The course has been completely rebuilt so all fairways, tees, greens, rough, bunkers, etc are NEW. The greens are a bit firm due to being new, but the course has a tremendous layout and is an improvement on the old Bayonet course. For the money (roughly $80 on weekend is what I paid) it is a MUCH better deal than Spyglass (at $375) or Spanish Bay ($250) or Pebble Beach ($475). This is the best deal in the Monterey area. And, there is a companion course, Black Horse, which is almost as good as Bayonet!

Construction in progress and course renovations in progress -- What an eyesore...Bayonet should be offering deep discounts for people to play while noise and sight of bulldozers are ruining the ambiance. Check out Bodega Harbour Golf Links -- during renovations $30/including cart for 18 holes -- Now that is priced to compensate for the construction and disruptions. Once priced right for the taxpayers who paid Uncle Sam and the U.S. Army to build this course, no longer the case. Hey.....remember this is Seaside.....were you thinking Pebble Beach.....Not!!

Construction going on around course with orange netting barriers, a tractor with plywood protectors IN THE MIDDLE of a fairway, chain saws cutting trees - need I go on. This would have been fine if staff had informed us when we made tee time AND offered a reduced rate of which they did neither. Very disappointing experience especially when on vacation and expectations high for a pleasant day of golf.
