Detailed description of Poppy Ridge Golf Course

Poppy Ridge Golf Course -Merlot/Chardonnay/Zinfandel, is a Public, 27 hole golf course facility in Livermore, California.

Poppy Ridge Golf Course first opened for play in 1996. The course designer was Rees Jones.

Poppy Ridge has three nine hole courses that are played in three different eighteen hole combinations. The holes are carved through the rolling hills of the southern Livermore Valley wine country. Wind that typically blows from the northwest dictates play on these courses. The three nines are all similar in length and design and have fairways that are sculpted into valleys at the base of shaggy, dune-like hills. The landing areas are roomy, though white sand bunkers will catch mis-placed drives. Water comes into play on one hole on the Merlot Course and on four holes on the Chardonnay Course.

BLACK tees: 7,088 yards, par 72, course rating 75.0, slope rating 138.

BLUE tees: 6,676 yards, par 72, course rating 73.0, slope rating 135.

WHITE tees: 6,224 yards, par 72, course rating 70.8, slope rating 130.

GOLD tees: 5,200 yards, par 69, course rating 66.8, slope rating 120.

Ridculously slow, especially for one of the 2 NCGA courses that supposedly prides itself in combating slow play. We are not speed demons or low handicappers, i.e. we are average and waited on EVERY hole, aprox. 2m - 6m. Saw a marshal on the front, never saw one on the back. After the 5h15m round the 4 of us had burgers and/or sandwichs w/ a pitcher with tip for $90. At least the waiter was nice. Had to sit outside in a cold wind because they were setting up for a function inside. After all we are only the golfers and NCGA members who support the facility so why should we get priority? Just to prove I'm not a bitter Bob, good practice areas and nice friendly staff

If your game isn't on, this golf can be very difficult. Not forgiving meaning if you miss right or left, you aren't on another fairway, it's either a lost ball or in a hazard.

Teh fairways were a bit thin in spots but the rest of the course was in fantastic shape. I think that courses in general should have marshalls or "Player Assistants" keeping the pace of play up. We did not wait too long on any one hole, but we were not quite able to play without a few wait-to-hit moments on the tee. Play it forward and move your ass out there guys!

Our foursome played this course in 4 hours and had a great time. We have played this course several times and continue to come back for the value and the challenge of the courses. Playing different nine holes gives you a different venue each time.

when i played the fairways were in bad condition. a lot of the fairways were roped off. i'm a 17 handicap and this course was very challenging. however it was a very enjoyable but you had better bring your a game if you don't it will be a long day. the views of the valley were great.

Overall a good challenging course. Clean and well maintained. I like the elevation changes and the water hazards. It can be windy and there are no trees for shade during the summer. Course drains well during the rainy winter months. NCGA senior rate is a good value. They no longer have GPS in the carts.

The key advantage of Poppy Ridge is their awesome Junior golfer policy. My boys, ages 11 and 13, played for only $10 each!! I am a NCGA member so I also received a discount for the excellent course. But you simply cannot beat the amazing junior rate, and how they welcome junior golfer to play with their dads....I would recommend to anyone who likes to play with their kids on a quality course.

The NCGA does a good job running this course, and the price is good for NCGA members. I played it with 23 other players, and we found the Merlot nine much harder than the Zinfandel nine. Seven of the nine most difficult holes relative to par were on Merlot. My only complaint is that the course layout is not walker-friendly. Strongly recommended if you don't mind riding.

This course is a steal for the price if you're an NCGA member -- $45. Fantastic layout and a lot of tremendously fun holes. Only the daily afternoon wind blemishes this great facility. The practice areas are the best in the East Bay.
