Detailed description of Winter Park Golf Course

Winter Park Country Club, is a Public, 9 hole golf course located in Winter Park, Florida.

The course first opened for play in 1914.

Winter Park Golf Course is the second oldest golf club in central Florida. This course is fun for ladies, senior citizens, and the average player. It has many trees that line the fairways and the postage-stamp sized greens are guarded by strategically located bunkers.

Par for the course is 35. From the back tees, the course plays to 2,508 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 2,392 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 4, a par-5 that plays to 535 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 8, a par-3 that plays to 146 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, a 535-yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 8, a 146 yard par-3.

Included in the Winter Park Fiscal Year 2016 budget is the funding of $1.2 million to renovate Winter Park Golf Course. Because of the scope of the renovation, the golf course was closed from March to September 2016.

In 2015, the City of Winter Park formed a 7 member task force of city managers and local golfers to determine what should be done to the aging 9 hole layout on 44 acres of beautiful green space. After exhaustive discussion, it was decided that the course needed a facelift and the supporting irrigation to maintain it. Two golf course designers were chosen to rebuild and redesign the century-old course, Keith Rhebb and Riley Johns of Integrative Golf Design. These are names you are probably not familiar with, but both course shapers have worked for the best. Keith worked on Streamsong Red in Polk County for Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and many of their other projects, while Riley worked for Tom Doak, the designer of Streamsong Blue, and is now working for Phil Mickelson on a new course in Alberta, Canada. March 1, 2016, the course was closed to allow for the six-month renovation. With a tight budget of $1.2 million Rhebb and Johns completely replaced the underground irrigation, reshaped and enlarged the flat and tiny putting surfaces with new Tif-Eagle Bermuda, dug out the old bunkers and replaced them with new ones to complement the greens, regrassed the fairways with Bermuda 419, and redesigned the tee boxes away from the roadways. Oh, by the way, they did it all under budget.
