Sportsmans Country Club is a Public 27 hole golf facility located in Northbrook, Illinois. Sportsman has two courses, The Eighteen Hole Course and The Nine Hole Course.
Sportsman's Country Club in Northbrook opened in 1931 and was designed and built by Edward Dearie Jr. Dearie had been head construction foreman for Donald Ross.
You can see the Ross influence in many of Dearie's holes at Sportsman's. You'll find traditional push-up greens that both reward good shots and challenge recovery shots from wayward approaches. The course is designed to accommodate the traditional southwesterly prevailing winds as well as the occasional and refreshing easterly that blows in off the lake in summer. Your tee shots will require strategy but won't overly punish the occasional hook or slice. You'll find a course that is both classic in design and fun to play.
Sportsman's Country Club was privately owned, though still open to the public, for most of its history, until it was sold to a developer in the late 1970s. In an outstanding display of civic pride and effort, citizens of Northbrook voted to allow the Park District to buy the course. Today, all 215 acres are proudly owned and operated by the Northbrook Park District!
Sportsman's classic roots continue with the new redesign by Jacobson Golf Course Design of Libertyville. Owner Rick Jacobson and lead designer Doug Myslinski followed the groundwork laid by Dearie, and carefully re-worked Sportsman's green surfaces, bunkers, and fairway contours to modernize the course for todays game while paying homage to the classic roots of this fine golf course.
In addition to reshaping Sportsman's bunkers in more of a Donald Ross style, some of the bunkers were realigned and repositioned to accommodate today's golfers.
Par for the course is 70. From the back tees the course plays to 6,278 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,997 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 17, a par-5 that plays to 544 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 6, a par-3 that plays to 152 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 7, a 487 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Sportsmans Country Club is # 10, a 169 yard par-3.

Course provides an enjoyable round of golf. Not too difficult to enjoy nor too easy. Rough around the various bunkers on the course was long and penal, a shot from the sand would be preferred.

Front nine finishes strong. The 16th and 17th are fun holes. Par 3's are the key to scoring here.

Great course for the price. Not too difficult of a course but fun to play and always in great shape. Pace of play can be an issue some days but overall great value.

Outstanding value for the typical golfer. The Professional staff is very helpful and available. The greens roll true and the bunkers are a fair test.
