Detailed description of Whittaker Woods Golf Course

Whittaker Woods Golf Course is a Public 18 hole golf course located in New Buffalo, Michigan, just 90 short minutes from downtown Chicago and literally steps from the Indiana state line.

Whittaker Woods Golf Course first opened in 1966. The course was designed by Ken Killian.

Whittaker Woods Golf Course was carved from woods and wetlands, Whittaker Woods offers both spectacular golf and immersion in nature. Whittaker Woods, with a slope rating of 144 from the back tees, is formidable enough to challenge the most competitive golfers, yet features multiple tee placements allowing golfers of all abilities to partake and have fun. Indeed, the course plays under 5,000 yards from the front tees.

The course gets its name from Captain Wessel Whittaker, one of the region’s original settlers. Captain Whittaker ran his ship aground on the Lake Michigan coastline near what is now New Buffalo in 1834 and fell in love with the landscape, which he described as “a natural harbor surrounded by dunes and tall trees where a river flowed from the surrounding woodlands into Lake Michigan.” The region’s natural beauty that so captivated Captain Whittaker is on full display at Whittaker Woods. The clubhouse has the woodwork and stonework from its origins as a 1920s farmhouse.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 7,071 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,912 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 16, a par-5 that plays to 549 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 8, a par-3 that plays to 165 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 7, a 468 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 14, a 361 yard par-4.

Beautiful course with most of the holes carved out of the woods and secluded. Limited interaction with others on the course. Challenging but fair course. May need to play it a couple of times to score well.

Championship course setting in a vacation spot on Lake Michigan. What more can I say. Challenging course to say the least with water, carry ranges and large greens all bunkered. You had better bring some extra golf balls but that is the fun of the course. I always schedule a couple groups from Crown Point to make the trip and play this location. They always go away loving the course. We always play this course at least 3-4 times each season even though we are over an hour away. In addition, they extend to our seniors great rates and show us that they care when we arrive. The pro shop and clubhouse indicates a championship course and the grill and restaurant is Chicago downtown quality. We are already planning on playing the course in the next few weeks. Why can this course be so inviting in a vacation spot setting? Because most play and visit during the weekends when all rates are high. Love this course.

A nice course in good condition, BUT... you better like to play right to left. Over half the holes play that way, 3, 9 10, 13, & 18 are very sharp right to left with several other holes being dogleg left. As I recall 12 holes play with the green to the left of the tee. I've played it several times. Since I played during the week I found it to be playable in 4 hours. Senior rate is available. Close to hotels and the Four Winds Casino.

Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
