Detailed description of Briar Leaf Golf Club

Briar Leaf Golf Club is a Public, 18 hole golf course located Just one hour from Chicago and 15 minutes from Lake Michigan in LaPorte, Indiana.

Briar Leaf Golf Club first opened for play in 1973.

With water on eight holes, an island green, rolling hills, trees and plenty of sand, Briar Leaf offers challenging holes. The course plays a surprisingly difficult 6,579 yards from the medal tees with a slope rating of 133, providing a great test for the low-handicap players while three other sets of tees are on offer at 6,217, 5,861 and 4,894 yards. This allows golfers to "choose their challenge," making the course enjoyable for all.

#3, a 130 yard par 3 is the most famous, or infamous, hole at Briar Leaf and is nicknamed "Alcatraz." This is the island green hole. The short tee shot you'll have to this green will test your nerves.

Just played with our traveling group. We play almost 30 plus courses from many areas and this is always one of our most enjoyable. Not quite championship caliber but is a very nice course with challenging holes and great clubhouse and restaurant. The staff is outstanding and cost was great to our seniors. All like this course and is definitely the finest in the Valpo.LaPorte, Michigan City area. Only Whitaker Woods is better in New Buffalo. Would recommend this course.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, I wouldn't recommend this course, Better than average course for the area, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing, Ranks with the best in this price level, Best course in the area

I normally travel with a group of good senior golfers. We have already played over 20 different courses this season. My friend and I decided to go to this course and scope it out prior to our group making the trek from CP later this summer. We were pleasantly surprised. Course was very enjoyable to play, difficult and hole layouts were enjoyable. Entire staff in clubhouse and out treated us like we mattered and they wanted us there. Food and beverage area was outstanding but understaffed that day. Rates were great with special golf coupons. We will take our group up to course in August and we are looking forward to the day. Only Coyote Crossing has been better to date with our Indiana experiences. Would recommend this course for great golf and enjoyable day. Only course that is higher in the area is Whitaker Woods but it is far more expensive.

We played on a damp, cloudy Wednesday, and almost had the course to ourselves. It's not a dramatic course, but a very playable decent course with rolling hills, and some scenic holes. The course was in good shape, and with 4 tee box selections fair for players of all levels. Their "Alcatraz" hole is over rated, but the rest of the course fine. I'll play the course again if I'm in the area.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
