Detailed description of Mount Pleasant Golf Club

Mount Pleasant Golf Club, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Baltimore, Maryland.

Mount Pleasant first opened for play in 1934. The Par-71 course was designed by Gus Hook. Mount Pleasant is a GolfDigest 4-star rated golf course. Mount Pleasant Ranked was ranked 12th Best Municipal Golf Course in the United States by Golfweek Magazine.

Mount Pleasant has been tournament tested over the years by both professional and amateur golfers. In 1956, Arnold Palmer secured his second American tournament win as a touring golfer. The course was also home of the Eastern Invitational Open from 1950-1963. Mt. Pleasant is a favorite for players looking for the challenge of a classic design.

In the 1956 event, Mr. Palmer hooked his first two tee shots into Hillen Road (the road that borders the first hole along the full length of the par-5). In frustration, Mr. Palmer returned to his caddie and jammed his driver back into his golf bag saying, "That's it... I quit." His playing partner, Billy Casper, pulled Palmer aside and said, "Arnold, you can spot this field a few shots and still win." With a grim look on his face, Palmer pulled an iron from the bag, teed off safely, and went on to win the tournament. Of course, the rest is history.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,757 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,489 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 1, a par-5 that plays to 560 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 6, a par-3 that plays to 135 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 9, a 465 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 18, a 336 yard par-4.

Played here on a Thursday afternoon, and paid $38 as a senior, which is at least $13 too much for a course in this condition.

Mount Pleasant Golf Club has a great reputation, and Golf Digest ranking (although from some years ago), and it is a nice layout, but is very shabby and in need of serious rehab. The cart paths were terrible, lots of ruts in fairways, very thin grass, many bare patches, bunker sand was very firm and thin, tee boxes were beat-up. Greens were actually pretty good: medium large, mildly contoured, medium-speed, and ran true. The 1934 design is excellent, with good use of terrain and elevation change, and lots of challenging shots. Distance markers are sometimes hard to find; to me, that's a sign of neglect. The clubhouse and pro shop are OK, but also a bit dated.

The staff, however, is top-notch: very friendly and welcoming, and seem sincerely interested in the clients.

I did have one aggrtavating encounter with a guy riding a mower in the fairway, and continuing despite seeing us on the tee: guess I should've tried to hit him...

Other reviewers have remarked on the pace of play, and it was really bad. Saw a Ranger on the front, but no sign of any Player Assistance on the back.

So what does this course need? First, to be shut down for about six or eight months to allow it to recover from heavy play, and all of the bare posts and ruts fixed. Cart paths need to be completely redone. Bunkers are pretty easy to fix, but they need the attention. Not sure that any of this is practical, given the current fiscal climate for municipal courses, but as it is, this course is not worth the price and time.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Better courses for less nearby, Worse than average course for the area
