Detailed description of Musket Ridge Golf Club

Musket Ridge Golf Club -18-Hole, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Myersville, Maryland.

Musket Ridge Golf Course first opened for play in 2001. Joe Lee designed the par-72 course. And now the rest of the story.

Musket Ridge golf course has roots in Civil War history. In September of 1862, Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, and James Longstreet staged a strategic retreat across Musket Ridge Golf Club property, just before the Battle of Antietam.

Joe Lee, the course architect, is a descendent of Robert E. Lee. Joe Lee was inspired by the history and the beauty of the property with which he had to work.

Joe Lee's course designs have included La Costa Country Club in Carlsbad, Calif, Bay Hill Golf Club and Lodge in Orlando, Cog Hill near Chicago, and The Doral Golf Resort's Blue Monster in Miami. Over 200 courses are witness to his design vision. Joe's design on land that his ancestor once passed over somehow closes a circle and puts a period on a lifetime of golf design achievement. Musket Ridge Golf Course was Joe lee's last full measure. He died shortly after the completion of this, his final course design.

Musket Ridge golf course is situated on top of a ridge with views of the hills, valleys, mountains, and countryside.

This course does not live on scenery alone. The layout is a gem. Yes. You can get into trouble, but it's not hidden trouble. The greens are large and true but undulating, and if you land the ball in the wrong spot, three-putts should be expected.

Most of the trouble comes from taking too much risk. Know your limitations, or it will cost you.

Hole #2 is a 168-yard par 3. It plays over a lake to an elevated tee.

Hole #3 is a 400-yard dog-leg right par-4. A simple iron is a safe play to a narrow fairway that slopes to the trouble on the right, but a driver faded correctly can leave a wedge to the green.

Hole #6 is 520-yard par-5. The hole plays from an elevated tee to a rolling fairway. The hole dog-legs to the left, and a correctly placed tee shot allows an opportunity to fly fairway bunkers and attack the green in two. Two of the other three par-5s are reachable in two shots, except the ninth on the Blue Course, a 567-yarder that plays uphill and frequently into the wind.

Hole #8 is a 185-yard par 3. This area around the green slopes considerably, bunkers can be a rolling ball's resting spot.

Hole #16 is a 413-yard par-4 that plays from a mountain-top elevated tee. You drive through an opening of trees to a narrow fairway below. Drives to the left, you are in trouble, miss to the right, and you can re-tee your lost ball. Hit down the middle, and you might have your new distance record with a good roll.

Musket Ridge Golf Club plays to a maximum distance of 6,902 yards for a par of 72. The course rating of 73.0 and a slope rating of 140.

Price reflects that I played here for a MSGA Pro-Am that served lunch, Dinner by Bonefish Grill, and a voucher for future round- so $125 is a steal for that. Greens were in the best shape I have ever seen them here- and I have played here for years many times since it opened. They were firm and fast- simliar to MD National down the street. The only complaint I have is the bunkers were very firm with little sand around many of the greens. I was assured those are off season priorities. Keep them firm in the fairways- let them be soft near the greens.

The Musket Ridge staff work hard to give the player a "private club" experience. The course layout remains interesting and challenging after many rounds of golf.

Played here 4-4-12, on the last day of the "aeration special" green fee of $30, plus tax. This is an update of my previous ranking. I think it's a wonderful golf course by every measure, and I highly recommend it. The only negative was that the recently aerated greens were just not ready. They were still pretty bumpy, and the course obviously recognizes that, as they've extended the special rate for a few more days. I also wanted to address previous comments about the bunkers being in poor shape. As played yesterday, they were pretty good: fairway bunkers were firm, and greensides were medium soft and very playable. I guess the course read those earlier comments and addressed the issue! Try Musket Ridge: you'll enjoy it!

My only complaint about the course are the condition of the bunkers. Many are hard pan with large rocks in them. They really need to invest in some sand. The Blue/Grey membership is quite a steal and you get a lot of golf for very little money especially with the twilight pricing!

After 60 years as a memeber of a prominent D. C. area country club, I find Musket Ridge to be the best course in the area, far above the usual daily fee track. Built for golfers not home owners. No adjacent home sites.

Superb drainage that they say allows you to play within fifteen minutes of a thunder storm!

Architect took great pains to utilize the mountain side grade separations. #1 is a great example with the tee box at least 100 feet above the target landing area with a large pond along the right side and the green tucked in around and behind it. Great git-go hole. Only serious problem is poorly maintained sand traps. Rewoking on the front nine underway. No two holes anywhere near alike. Great par 5s that a good player can reach in two.

At 82 years of age, I have shot my age each of the last 3 years. Rarely find a bad lie. Benefits in joining the Blue-GRay club. Can not wait for the opening of the 2009 season.

PLayed here 9-2-08, on a special "Aerated Greens" discount price of $35...a SUPER deal.

Wonderful golf course in every measure: scenic, challenging, fair, superbly conditioned. Even though the greens had been aerated the previous week, we found them quite good: very playable, and the aeration just was not a factor.

The layout is awesome: the course has significant elevation change, and the architect took full advantage of it. The tee box on the opening hole is about 100 feet above the landing area, which is scalloped and mounded, and ends at a sizable pond, with the green slightly offset to the left: wow, what a great golf shot! No two holes look remotely alike, and there are very few blind shots, so it is not tricked up (as is the PB Dye course just a few miles away). Tee boxes were in good shape for this late in the year, and all are flat, with no crowning. Fairways were in great shape, and are generously proportioned in most cases. First cut rough is punishing, but not overly so. Bunkers are many, some exceedibgly deep, but all had good sand and were playable. Greens are largish, and most are fairly heavily contoured.

Pro shop is quite nice, if small, and the 19th hole is very "English-clubby." The day we were there, the bar attendant was a delightful lady named JJ, and she is worth the trip herself!

This course compares very favorably with the other upscale courses in the area, PB Dye, Maryland National, Hollow Creek, Worthington Manor, and IMHO, is a very close second to Whiskey Creek...and at $35, it is absolutely TOPS! I did not recommend it for a vacation stop, since the area is just not well-suited to that, but this golf course is a real delight, and I highly recommend it.

We've played this course several times over the past couple years. Really like it a lot. It is challenging, pretty views, and in great condition. This was our first experience of slow pace of play. Got stacked up several times. Only thing that left a bad taste in my mouth was use of my "Tee Time" golf book. Was supposed to get $15 off the price. When I presented the book, the staff told me that would come to $60...I asked what the undiscounted price was and he said $75. Okay, good. Then I asked my buddy (who did not have a Tee Time book) what he paid, and he said $60. Now what's with that??
