Detailed description of Cross Creek Golf Club

Cross Creek Golf Club, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Beltsville, Maryland.

Cross Creek Golf Course first opened for play in 2002. The par-70 course was designed by Thomas E. Clark, Dan Schlegel and Jim Cervone of Ault, Clark & Associates.

Cross Creek Golf Club will get your attention. The terrain is demanding as is the golf. You better warm up before you hit the first tee. Hole #1 is a par 5 that requires a precise drive over water with trees lining the remainder of the hole. Now you know why you want to warm up a bit.

The design embraces the natural forested landscape while carving out fairways that will make accuracy and shot making a premium. On the back nine the remnants of an old gravel quarry afforded many unique opportunities to forge spectacular holes amid the weathered vertical sand backs. This wooded 18-hole championship layout, with the Little Paint Branch Creek meandering through the course, several spirited elevation changes and rock outcroppings on several holes offers players scenery that is unmatched in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Cross Creek plays to a maximum distance of 6,356 yards for a course rating of 70.4 and a slope rating of 123.

Black Gold tees: 6356 yards

Creekside tees: 6035 yards

Quarry tees: 5268 yards

Fox Trail tees: 4413 yards

Course is very demanding. Very tight--not very friendly if your game is off, but a very enjoyable golf course to play.

Pace of play - almost 5 hours on a Monday - tarnished an otherwise nice experience. At times there were 4 groups of golfers on one hole. Marshals needed to enforce pace of play.

Played here 9-3-09 for the first...and last...time.

The course is VERY tight, and if you are not hitting the ball straight, you are in serious trouble. I played the blue tees, 6,035 yards, sloped at 130, and it felt like it should have been sloped at 150. Design is routed through a development and the course went where they could not build houses. There is essentially no rough off the fairway, just a few trees, and then someones back yard. Some tee vistas are very intimidating, with just a narrow chute, frequently over water. However, I guess if you are on your "A" game, it is playable. I was not on my best game, and the course just beat me to death.

Course conditions were just terrible: the guy in the pro shop told to not judge the course by the green on #1, as it was the worst - well he was wrong it was only one of several very bad, burned-out greens. Fairways were generally OK, with some soggy spots (despite no recent heavy rains). Bunkers were very good. Tee boxes were not good: grass was thin on many of them (Possibly because so many of them are in the shade of big trees), and all of them were weed-infested. Environmental areas on almost every hole, so a ball in them is gone forever.

Anyway, I did not enjoy my round, at least partly because I just could not get commfortable on this very tight design. Clubhouse and pro shop were nice, but the starter was a little gruff. I do not recommend Cross Creek for anyone...

Driving range is mats only and irons only. :(

Staff members were not overly friendly, esp the starter.

Course was in better shape than I anticipated.

Greens were tough to figure. Some greens held high shots others balls rolled all the way to the back.

Overall not bad. Had an enjoyable round.

If you are off the fairway, your ball is gone - very tight and lots of environmental areas. I would not recommend this course for a new golfer or a high handicapper. However if you like a challange, this might be just right for you.
