Detailed description of Fairway Hills Golf Club

Fairway Hills Golf Club, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Columbia, Maryland

Fairway Hills Golf Club opened for play in 1995. The course was designed by Ron Prichard.

Fairway Hills is a pleasant break for those of us who don't hit it 325 yards from the tee. Playing about 6,200 yards from the back tees, this course gives average hitters a chance to score and with water on the 12 of 18 holes, it forces the bombers to be accurate. A shot maker's course, it offers slight undulation. The course moves through woodlands and around bunkers and wetlands.

Designer Ron Pritchard carved this course through the Maryland timber. He used the natural features of the site to create a fun and interesting golf course. This par 70 golf course has three par 5's and six par 3's. There are five sets of tees for players of all levels including a set called “The First Tee” for the youth participating in The First Tee Program.

Played mid-morning, started as a twosome, caught up to another two who were waiting for the group ahead of them to move. So we paired up, and then we all waited for the group(s) ahead to move on. Fortunately they only played nine, so the second half went pretty quickly. The Ranger showed up just as we were finishing #9: perfect timing!

Layout is a little quirky, as has been noted by previous reviewer. It's pretty clear that the course is routed where they could not build houses, as nearly every fairway is either lined with dwellings or routed through floodplain. But, it is a pretty course, with some very nice vistas, and don't be fooled by the apparent shortness: there are only a few holes without moguls, overhanging trees, or tight landing areas. Every green is large and undulating, several with some pretty severe slope. Lots of green-side moguls, swales, bunkers, and rough, too. Another downer (beside the houses) is the safety netting along several fairways (notably #1 and #11) to keep stray missiles off the deck and out of the family room.

Course is not walk-able due to great distances between holes.

Now, the conditions: greens were generally OK, firm and pretty fast for a muni. Tee boxes were good. Fairways were terrible: many with large burned patches, lots of GUR, and much acreage with thin and patchy cover. Bunkers were pretty rough, and need lotsa TLC from the power rakers.

Staff was very cordial, and the starter thanked us profusely for coming out, and invited us back, soon. Nice friendly bunch.

Overall, Fairway Hills is a nice enough course, but not one I'd choose to play often. For the same money, there are better courses nearby, such a Diamond Ridge or Rattlewood.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I wouldn't recommend this course, Average course for the area

Fairly short course at 5800 yds (+/-). The thoughtful layout demands accuracy, and there aren't many easy par 4s or 5s. Look for your pars on the par 3's.

Water on a good number of holes. Short holes can be challenging with water, doglegs or considerable hazards.

First hole is an easy (short & straight) par 4 but the next is a 550 yard par 5 which is a true challenge even if you are a long hitter. A dogleg off the tee box over a hazard area, with two more hazards to negotiate before you face an elevated green.

The back nine increases in difficulty and the last three holes are especially challenging and as difficult as you will find in many private courses.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
