Detailed description of Shanty Creek, Cedar River Golf Course

Shanty Creek Resorts is a Resort, 72 hole golf facility located in Bellaire, Michigan. The facility has four distinct 18-hole golf courses including Arnold Palmer's The Legend Course, Tom Weiskopf's Cedar River Golf Course, the challenging Schuss Mountain Course, and the original Summit Golf Course.

Shanty Creek, Cedar River Golf Course first opened for play in 1999. The course was designed by Tom Weiskopf.

Cedar River is rated among "The Top 10 You Can Play" by Golf Magazine. Contoured to take full advantage of the Northern Michigan Terrain, Cedar River is traditional golf at its finest. With five tee placements on most holes, this 7,000-yard journey is a challenge for scratch golfers yet it can be enjoyed by high handicappers.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6989 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5315 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 18, a par-5 that plays to 604 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 14, a par-3 that plays to 163 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 1, a 458 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 6, a 357 yard par-4.

This is our 2nd course of the five (5) that we are playing in the Shanty Creek GC complex this weekend. What a rolling, wooded, sand trap infested layout, many elevated greens being protected by false fronts and sand traps. Greens roll very consistence at 9-10 with hidden breaks on those hillside locations. With seven (7) score card selections ranging from Blacks at 6,980 / 73.2 / 135 down to Reds at 5,315 / 70.3 / 121 on this Par 36/36 layout. We played the Whites at 5,965 / 68.5 / 124 and found that 195-210yd carries had great landing areas to score from and further back at the Blues (6,530yds) would have been a lot more challenging on those 2nd shots. On the Front 9 your first six (6) holes are pretty much straightaway with good landing areas and if you miss those hidden fairway traps, but watch those uphill approach yardages. They say #5 Par 4 at 390yds is their Hcp1 hole because at 140yds in its all carry to a blind, uphill narrow green. The #7 Par 4 that sweeps left around a pond at 425-325yds has more landing area than it looks from the tee box, but you have to decide how much water you can cutoff for that 2nd shot. The #9 is a narrow 537-495yd uphill climb to the narrow green with a RH trap and a fall off LH side. The Back 9 starts off with a shorter 510-474yd Par 5 with sand traps down the RH side for those that fade the ball. The #13 Par 4 at 285-272yd has a split downhill fairway with the LH side being wider than the RH side and a safer shot to the green with a 200yd tee shot. The #14 is a 120 foot drop down to the Par 3 green playing 144-135yds and don't go long but the RH side will kick your ball on the green from center yardage. Finishing hole #18 Par 5 at 581-518yds has you playing to your 3rd shot from the 119yd stick and you'll stay short of the hidden pond guarding the right-side of the green. We all liked this course this morning. at least the ones that stayed in the fairway and didn't stray into the lurking woods that boarded every hole. I ended up shooting a personal best at 37/35 w/29 putts and four (4) birdies that doesn't happen.........EVER.

After disappointing course in the morning, this course was a very nice change. The course is challenging, the green fast and a joy to play. I would play this one again.
