I haven't traveled through the "Thumb" area in a long time, so I thought I'd visit a old local course. ,p> Built in 1928 by a local golfing enthusiast (I'd guess), this 2,911yd / 114 / 34.1 Par 35 is the pride of the Caro, MI community.
I started playing it in 1972 - 1978 and enjoyed the straight forward layout that ventured into a wooded area for five (5) holes and back out. The other fairways had some small pine trees planted to block the prevailing SW wind. Now forty (40) years later, tall pines defining narrow/close cut fairways leading to the small round but firm greens.
Starting out on #1 419yd Par 5 is easy if you stay in the narrow fairway and stay out of the rough and pine trees.
The #2 384yd Par 4 is the Hcp 1 because of the slight dogleg left and if your tee shot is left, tall trees block your view.
The #3 202yd Par 3 is normally into the wind plays longer than it looks.
The #4 hole is a 381yd slight RH dogleg with a big tree on the left side landing area that looks to be in the center from the tee box. Hitting a fade at the tree (180yd out)will put you in prime location to attack the green.
Next challenge is the tree lined driving chute on #7 283yd Par 4 and the mowed narrow (thick rough) landing area.
Finishing Holes #8 401yd Par 4 and #9 496 Par 5 are straightaway and narrow mowed like previous #7. The new owners have really put time/effort in making this a more challenging, enjoyable and better conditions than the past few years.
If the rain keeps rolling through like it has, this will be one lush track this summer. I enjoyed walking nine (9) for the $9.00 ($25 18/cart) and shooting 38 w/16 putts on this 91 year old course, thats still going strong and getting better.
