Detailed description of Charlevoix Country Club

Charlevoix Country Club is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located just three miles north of beautiful downtown Charlevoix, Michigan

Charlevoix Golf & Country Club first opened for play in 1993. The course was designed by Jerry Matthews.

Heather lined fairways coupled with water hazards in play provide for challenging rounds time after time. This sporting design appeals to those who like both Links and traditional North American golf course design.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6520 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5084 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 15, a par-5 that plays to 585 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 4, a par-3 that plays to 131 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 15, the 585 yard par-5 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Charlevoix Golf & Country Club is # 4, the 131 yard par-3.

Returned here again, one (1) year later with heavy rains last night to soften up the fairways. With "No Roll" conditions we decided to play the Whites at 2,918/3,176yds / 70.5 / 134 on this great 1993 Jerry Matthews soggy course today. Still a wonderful layout as I wrote before, so I'll hit a few holes I forgot about. The #2 is a short slight dogleg right Par 4 at 299-278yds so hit your 160-175yd tee shot and you'll have a good look at the green from the 100yd stick. The #5 is a double dogleg 528yd Par 5 that protects it's Hcp 2 by having ponds on the inside corners to catch those trying to get home in 2. Easy par when playing three (3) well placed approach shots. The #9 dogleg right Par 5 at 506yds is short on yardage but your green approach shot needs to be "Spot On". Back 9 holes 15-18 are the toughest finishing holes you'll see anywhere. The #15 Par 5 requires a great tee shot 215-240yds to have a 2nd shot carrying the marsh to setup your approach shot on this 585-535yd Hcp 1 hole. Struggled today with soft fairway conditions (roll & hitting) as it played longer but shooting 46/40 w/32putts was still a joy to be here.

Have a group of sixteen (16) golfers that will be playing all four (4) of the A-Ga-Ming courses in a three (3) day package. Staying in a Condo that overlooks the Sundance #7 & #8 holes was a real treat for views. This 1993 wooded, water and marsh Jerry Matthews design is one of his best designs I believe I've played and doesn't lack for water hazards on twelve (12) holes. Tucking eleven (11) greens behind water/marsh hazards, requires full carries to the dance floor if low scores are to be had. Beautiful manicured sand traps are in full force around the greens and also some fairway locations where water/marsh hazards are lacking. Conditions from tee to green are just what you would find at any Private course with yardages easy to find. With four (4) tee selections you can choose from 6,520yd / 72.2 / 137 down to 5,080yd / 65.7 / 119 you can pick your challenge of the day on this Par 36/36 track. We chose the Blues (3,097yds) for the Front 9 and switched to the Whites (3,176yds) for the Back 9 as the Blue 3,423yds had some challenging forced carries. Front 9 starts out with three (3) short Par 4's (299-372) with #4 131yd Par 3 the last of the warm-up holes. The next five (5) holes have water everywhere framing parts of the fairway and greens. The #5 is a Hcp 2 narrow winding 528yd Par 5 with water RH/LH next to fairway and in front of the green, play smart. The #6 is a Hcp 8 full 203yd water carry with bailout in the RH bunker. The #8 Hcp 4 hole has a sweeping left fairway around a pond and also protecting the front/left side of the green on this 405yd Par 4 layout. The #9 is a dogleg right, 506yd Par 5 with the green covered on three (3) sides with water for those errant approach shots. The Back 9 starts out with two (2) straightaway 342yd / 419yd Par 4's that are just narrow so get the straight sticks out. Now these last seven (7) holes are where driving ahead to view landing areas is strongly advised because of hidden hazards, not seen from tee or even 2nd shots. The #12 is a 507yd narrow Par 5 with missed green shots in sand or marsh. The #13 has water across the front of the green on this 348yd Par 4. The #15 is your Hcp 1 hole that plays 585yds with your tee shot to favor LH side of fairway or the marsh carry 2nd shot could be outta reach. Playing the fairway here is a must to avoid marsh/water all the way to the hole. The #16 is a dogleg right 426yd Par 4 with water/marsh framing shots tee to green. Leaving the 444yd dogleg right Hcp 3 hole for #18, was just putting salt on the wounds. With water all down the righthand side, fairway jetting out into the pond had me playing smartly for bogey. Ended up shooting 40/43 w/33 putts on the start of this golfing extravaganza in Northern Michigan. This is well worth the stop to play a well conditioned rolling, wooded, water and marsh infested golf course.
