Detailed description of Seven Oaks Golf Club

Seven Oaks Golf Club, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Hamilton, New York.

Seven Oaks Golf Club first opened for play in 1957. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones.

Seven Oaks Golf Club is owned by Colgate University. The course is named after the ancestral home of the Colgate family. The was an original nine hole course on the campus behind Andrews and Stillman Halls. That nine hole course was too small to meet present day requirements thus the plans for an 18 hole course were put into action.

The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones. He graduated from Cornell in 1930 and immediately set about his love and subsequent life's work - designing golf courses.

Jones designed Seven Oaks in 1934, but because of the depression, the plans sat idle in a drawer until the 1950's. Ground was broken for the first nine holes in May of 1956. A year later, the course was completed for play. The second nine was completed in 1964. Seven Oaks is characteristic of all Jones' courses, which include strategic deployment of water, along with extensive tee areas and large, expansive greens. The course, which is part of Colgate University, has fairways that are fairly open and easy to walk. Water hazards (some ditches, four ponds, and a creek) come into play on twelve holes.

Seven Oaks Golf Club plays to a par-72 and a maximum distance of 6,915 yards. The course rating is 74.4 and the slope rating is 144.

Seven Oaks is a great course due to its layout and overall conditioning. It hosted the NCAA Championships in 1977. Fairways are generous and well groomed, the greens are large, undulating an slick. The rough can be totally punishing, particularly in wet conditions. I do think it's priced a little high for central NY; if you don't get on as a guest, expect to pay about 80 bucks with cart. There are good courses to play in the area for a lot less.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
