Detailed description of Sunset Hills Public Golf Course

Sunset Hills Public Golf Course, is a Public, 27 hole golf facility located in Charlotte, North Carolina. The facility has an 18 hole regulation course known as the "Old Course" and a 9 hole course known as the "Learning Course."

The Old Course opened for play in 1952 and was designed by Brooks Frazier.

The Old Course is a fairly wide open golf course. The front nine has tree-lined fairways and undulating greens. There is a creek that flows alongside some very demanding holes; one of them is #10, a 590-yard, par 5, and the other is #1, a 440-yard, par 4. The course is very scenic and loaded with wildlife.

Blue tees: par-72, 6,124 yards

White tees: par-72, 5,776 yards

Red tees: par-72, 4,845 yards

Traveling south to Charlotte,NC for an warm New Years Eve and round of golf. Found this 18 hole 1952 era built course ready for play. Although two (2) days of rain had softened the 2,798/3,251yd / 68.8 / 118 Par 35/36 rolling layout, I was ready to play. The rainy conditions mixed with normal play had done damage to some fairway areas, mostly around the green areas. Cart path only/player responsibly could have prevented this damage to future play. The small raised greens were the courses biggest defense where yardage is on the short side. Front 9 layout has good separation between holes and fair landing areas from the Blue tees. No real sand traps to worry about only slight doglegs to breakup the straightaway easy play. The Back 9 #10 starts out with an tree lined narrow 525yd Par 5 to keep you focused. The #11 448yd Par 4 with a Hcp 2 protects itself with soft conditions and a raised green. The course lowers its guard on the #13 441yd par 5, but don’t stray on this narrow hole. The #18 is a risk/reward 396yd on it’s 2nd shot that has a tree/creek protecting the front of the green. My low rating on conditions would be higher on dryer layout with less damage. Ended up shooting 36/41 w/27putts as greenside saves were a premium asset today is the wet conditions. Good way to start the new year on this 46 degree day.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Played the course on a weekday in early April. I really enjoyed the course. This is an old style public course that is secluded and has a nice comfortable welcoming feel.

The welcome starts at the club house, and ends with the "hope you enjoyed your round" from the cart guy when we returned the cart. In between, the course could be described as comfortable. It's a course that pretty much lays out in front of you, very few doglegs, generous fairways and very few protective bunkers in front of the tees. That is not to say the course is a total pushover..it is not. A 3 to 4 foot ravine with a creek parallels a number of holes and managed to capture one of my drives. There is the obligatory 165 yard over the water par-3 that can always intimidate. For me, the most difficult aspect were the small push-up greens. The greens did not hold well so a shot to the green would often roll off, and since the greens were usually elevated, the roll off could deposit your ball some distance from the green. Very few greens had back stops such as mounds or sand bunkers to prevent the ball from bounding far off the green.

The course was maintained nicely and the pace of play was great. This would be my home course if I lived within 10 miles. The price is right and course is too. I highly recommend this course.
