Detailed description of Pinehurst Resort & Country Club -No.2

Pinehurst Resort & Country Club is a premier golf facility that boasts nine (9) 18-hole championship courses located in Pinehurst, North Carolina. The courses are Numbered No.1 - No.9.

Pinhurst No.2 is the best of the best. No. 2 is a challenge not because of its length, topography, unruly routing, water features or green size - but because of the combination of factors that have made thousands laugh and cry at the same time. Undulating greens. Carefully placed bunkers. Strategic layout that tests both the long and short game. It is golf the way it was meant to be played, "the fairest test of championship golf" ever designed by Ross, in his own words. It is also top 10 in the country, and site of more championships than any other course in the country, including the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open Championships.

OK on the whole I loved this course. The history, the layout, the challenge were all there. And, once you play it, you will really appreciate the skill of the pros when they play the US Open here. I loved the layout, the tree-lined fairways, the waste areas, and the feel of walking the fairways. What I did not enjoy were the famous dome-shaped greens. When you shape a green like an upside-down cereal bowl and then make the greens hard and fast, it almost becomes a joke while playing it. Our foursome must have said "great shot" 15 times only to then say, "stop, don't roll off the green". Great shots that often rolled only 3-5 feet past the hole often ran off the green and as much as 30 feet away from the surface. I suspect these greens were fine back in the 1930's when greens rolled much slower but wow, they are almost impossible now! Be ready to add about 10 shots to your normal score, even if you play well. Still, make sure you play this famous course. I did not play the other Pinehurst layouts but hope they do not have the same crowned greens. Oh, make sure you walk the entire clubhouse to see all the history and drive over the hotel too. ( I only gave this course 4 stars due to the green design)

Would travel: 60-120 Miles, Vacation Worthy

Played the course with a large corporate group, so I didn't pay the green fee. Just a great course and one I hope to play again.

You had to stay at the resort to get a tee time on No. 2. It was well worth it. Dinner at the Carolina and seeing the history walking down the many halls was amazing. The course was a fair challenge and I would love to play it again. I didn't get a chance to play the other courses at Pinehurst, but in speaking with several thers players, they all enjoyed them.

Okay...I just played this course again since it was renovated and not getting the mystique about #2. It's not particulary scenic........just pine tree lined fairways. The domed greens weren't event that difficult (maybe because we were a week after aeration so they held). I played #8 as well, and felt it was a much better golf experience. It has water, elevation and some really pretty holes.
