Detailed description of Sweetbriar Golf & Pro Shop, Legacy 18
Sweetbriar Golf & Pro Shop is a Public, 36 hole golf facility located in Avon Lake, Ohio. The facility has two, 18-hole golf courses. They are, The Sweetbriar 18 holes and The Legacy 18 Holes.
The two 18 hole courses are built through acres of wooded landscape with a natural wetlands area and ponds.
The Legacy 18 Holes Course was built in 2002 and 2007, the front and back 9's of Legacy offer two differing landscapes that create a diverse 18 holes. The front 9 is a links style layout with winding fairways and large greens. The back 9 of Legacy is built through a wooded landscape and offers a more traditional, East Coast feel to the golfer with natural wetlands areas and risk reward par fives. The back 9 of Legacy is a perfect compliment to the front Legacy 9.

Snow on the course yesterday...But not today, so I'm playing. Saw this 36 hole facility was located 3 miles off I-90 and with 45 degrees, green grass, sun shining.....I'm stopping. The newer course Legacy was open (Cart Path) so for $35/18cart off I went with a 4 hole gap to the next twosome. Even though the sculptured fairways were soggy, grass length was tight with the rough good length. This is a golfing community but the homes are well placed so they don't appear intrusive to the course layout. The many trees that line most fairways, somewhat hide/protect the nice homes. The Front 9 (3,157yds / 36) starts out with a 382yd / Par 4 with water LH side fairway and front of green, all carry. I knew this was going to be a long day. The #9 347yd / Par 4 is a tight hole with water down the LH side that will could have you making a score changing decision. This is more of a Links layout with the homes appearing at #3 through #8 but still offering an enjoyable setting for a day on the links. Greens were surprisingly smooth but showed some shading discolor due to the lack of Spring sunshine. Sand traps were well groomed and ready to receive those errant shots to the greens they were protecting. The Back 9 (3,400 / Par 36) again starts off with a 454yd / Par4 straight away hole.....but with no carry it felt like 500yds. This half of the layout is more wooded with #14 - #16 the only holes with homes showing themselves. I scored higher but enjoyed the layout better than the front 9. Each hole has a full view from the tee box so it allows you to make a game plan...following it is another story. Found that some of the sprinkler heads have three (3) yardages on them which I've never seen, but liked it. Shooting 39/42 w/34 putts on this "True Carry" day gave those longer irons a real workout as well as pinching those fairway shots. Looking forward to returning and playing the Sweetbriar "Inner Course" that is "Home Fee" and looked to be every bit of a challenge that the Legacy (4 tee boxes / 6,557 yd to 4,831yds) had to offer. Worth stopping in and playing this well conditioned layout and being 5 minutes off the highway.
