Detailed description of Heron Lakes Golf Course -The Greenback

Heron Lakes Golf Course is a 36-hole golf course facility located in Portland, Oregon. The facility has two 18-hole golf courses. They are. The Greenback Course and The Great Blue Course.

The Greenback Course first opened for play in 1971. The Greenback course was designed by Robert trent Jones, Sr. The Great Blue was built in two nine hole sections with the first nine opening in the late 1980s and the final nine opening in the early 1993. The Great Blue was designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr.

The 6,608-yard Greenback Course is a flexible layout featuring elevated, bunker-framed greens and a generally easy-going demeanor. This parkland-style course attracts beginners, seniors, and others who welcome a moderate challenge in a beautiful setting. Greenback incorporates trees, six ponds, and 86 bunkers as it plays toward large, welcoming greens.

The Great Blue Course is a favorite challenge among low handicap golfers. The 6,902 yard course's fairways ramble between Scottish-style mounds and pose a collection of excellent risk/reward riddles for all four sets of tees.

Traps are abysmal - no maintenance or sand in most. Greens are hit and miss, sometimes good, often marginal. We play in a league so we are pretty much stuck; most would prefer to go elsewhere but not enough want to switch.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Greens were excellent, fairways were good but many poorly drained other areas. Some bunkers have poor drainage. Best played in the summer months. A challenging course that is never boring, exceptionally easy to walk and a top value. The two courses here are the jewels in the crown of city owned courses in Portland. Both are must play courses in the Portland area. Very close to Portland Airport. "Temporary" club house due to course location in flood plain.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

The Greenback at Heron Lakes is the original 18-hole course at this site and is a nice, average golf course in the metropolitan Portland area.

The Greenback is a relaxing experience compared to its sister course, the Great Blue, which is a difficult, championship course located on the opposite end of the parking lot and Pro Shop.

For pure enjoyment, the Greenback offers a nice challenge to the medium and high handicap golfer, with generous fairways, a decent number of water hazards, and bunkers, both fairway and greenside. A nice variety of holes, some straight, some with doglegs, some long, some short are there to welcome golfers with all degrees of skills.

The Pro Shop itself is decent, but the restaurant, what there is of it, is an embarrassment for a facility of this nature. The course is far too good to have such a small restaurant with such a limited menu.

Make sure you don't go on race day. The course is next to Portland International Raceway and the racing gets pretty loud.
