Hannastown Golf Club first opened for play in 1919. The first 9 holes were designed by Emil Loeffler. Emil Loeffler was a long time superintendent / professional at Oakmont Country Club.
The Hannastown Golf Club course stayed as 9-hole course until 1997, when Brian Ault and Tom Clark were hired to add 9 more holes. The new 9 and the old 9 are intermingled to allow desired routing. The golfer today plays 2 old holes, 6 new ones, 4 old ones, 3 new ones and finishes on 3 old ones. Given that the old 9 has old style greens that are pure poa annua and the new 9 has USGA speck greens with bent grass it does make getting a feel for the greens somewhat of a task.
The original 9 definitely was influenced by Loeffler-s experience at Oakmont with fall-away greens, a very long par 3 similar to #8 at. The new 9 has smaller greens that feature some very interesting slopes and mounds in the center of the greens. These greens tend to penalize the player who tries not to short-side himself by creating difficult chips over the center mound to a green that slopes away. Frequently the player who does miss on the short side has an easier uphill chip.
The course is 6668 yards and plays to a par of 70. There are five par 3s and three par 5s in the mix. The course rating is 72.4 and the slope is 127 from the tips.
Gold tees: par-70, 6,668 yards, course rating 72.9, slope rating 129.
Blue tees: par-70, 6,668 yards, course rating 70.9, slope rating 128.
White tees: par-70, 5,643 yards, course rating 66.9, slope rating 123.
Red tees: par-72, 5,000 yards, course rating 69.0, slope rating 120.

The original 9 holes reminds one of Oakmont CC. The new 9 is equally a penal style of architecture --- poor shots are punished --- a great challenge for good players, and by playing the forward tees, still fun for the lesser accomplished player. Also, an unbelieveable bargain by any standard --- terrific greens and overall great condition.

I have played this course many times over a 50 year period. I believe it is in the best shape I have ever seen it. The greens are fast and true, the layout is a excellent test for good golfers and people are friendly. The old and new holes do clash somewhat but the overall blend makes for a good test of golf. The cost is reasonable.
