South Mountain Golf Course, is a Public, 9 hole golf course located in South Mountain, Pennsylvania. in Michaux State Forest.
The course began in 1921 when a group of doctors at the nearby South Mountain Sanatorium built three holes for a recreation area so patients could use golf as therapy. Six more holes were added between 1930-31.
The course remained in that state --- nine holes, each with a sand "green" -- until 1964 when the land passed to what is now the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Resources, it then sat idle for three years.
In 1967 a local group leased the land from the state and opened the course for play.
Between 1975 and 1985 the group, South Mountain Golf Course Inc. built nine new greens -- using grass this time instead of sand -- and constructed new tees and a new clubhouse, which was remodeled again in 2007.
Although the course is located in the mountains from which it gets its name, the terrain is flat. The perimeter of the course is extremely wooded. The only hazards, other than dogleg fairways are the large trees that can alter your shots. The greens are well-maintained.
The nine holes play to a par-36 for nine holes and par 72 when played as a double loop eighteen holes. The Blue tee 18 hole yardage is 5,784 yards, from the white tees 5,480 yards, and the red tees play to 4,761 yards.
