South Hills Golf Club is a Public, 27 hole golf facility located in Hanover, Pennsylvania. The facility has three 9-hole golf courses. They are The North, The South and The West.
South Hills first opened for play in 1960. The course was designed by William F. Gordon and David W. Gordon.
The South plays to 3,403 yards and a par of 36. The North course measures 3,172 yards with a par of 35. The West course measures 3,306 yards with a par of 36.
South Hills offers both traditional and modern golf course architecture. This 49 year old gem is one of the Commonwealth's best public layouts.
This championship course is situated amid the beautiful rolling hills of southern Pennsylvania. The mature, tree-lined fairways offer a challenging golf destination.
Their West Course will remind players of Southern Style Courses, with water prominent on eight holes, including a breathtaking island green.
They have four sets of tees to provide an appropriate challenge for players off all levels.

Our group of travelling seniors played here 10-1-13 for $20, with the Tee Time book, a fair price for this quality of course in this condition.
Have reviewed the course before, so will confine remarks to conditions. In a word: rough, largely because of no irrigation system. Tee boxes are OK, but have some bare spots. Fairways were VERY firm, with lots of sparse patches: had to move the ball to grass on almost every shot. Lots of GUR. Bunkers were very poor, with thin sand and lots of rocks (there was a sign in the clubhouse saying it was OK to move the ball in bunkers...don't see that too often). Greens were in good shape, and putted fairly fast, but were extremely hard: in 18 holes, never had to fix a single pitch mark...couldn't find any to fix!
Staff, as always, was gracious and helpful.

Used tee time golf pass for the price. Played all 27 holes. Course was in very good shape. Some tee boxes could use some work, but if something is going to be lacking on a course, I want it to be where I can place the ball where I want and on a tee. Greens were very receptive.

I played in an interminably lengthy scramble. However, I(and the team) played well enough to win the tournament. Despite the pace of play, we all agreed that we'd like to play the course again in non-tournament mode.

South Hills has three nines, with North-South being the original 18. The West course is the newest, and the nicest of the nines, IMHO.
Overall, South Hills is a mature course, with lots of very large trees along the fairways, especially on the South nine. South is also pretty tight on a few holes, but not unfairly so. Course does not have an irrigtion system, so conditions can get pretty tough late in the summer. Layout is OK, nothing special, Tee boxes are fairly small by contemporary standards, but are usually OK. Fairways are crowned, but no sculpting or moguls to speak of: landing area is generally fairly wide. Bunkers are usually not in very good shape: very firm and thin. Greens are medium to large, generally putt fairly slow, and late in the season, several have bad patches on them.
Some really nice holes: North #2 is a downhill par 4 with a left-to-right sloping fairway down to a valley and kick up to the green. Always a tough par for me. North #8 is a relatively short par 3 wich seems to defy landing/keeping a ball on the green: very challenging. West #9 is a downhill dogleg left, with a pond through the turn: very fun hole.
Golf carts are pretty beat up. Clubhouse is old, but adequate. 19th hole is decent, and prices are fair; service is always excellent.
Overall, it is a nice, friendly atmosphere, and the course is worth a play.

Need water badly. Too dry, rain has been lacking for several months and they do not have enough irrigation.
