Detailed description of Wedgefield Plantation Golf Course, CLOSED 2016

Wedgefield Plantation Golf Course is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Georgetown, South Carolina.

The course, designed by J Porter Gibson, opened for play in 1973.

The course was built on land that had been a rice plantation established in the mid-1700's. Numerous oak trees line the fairways. The most difficult hole is #5, a 440-yard, par 4, with a water hazard that comes into play alongside the fairway.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 7,072 yards. From the forward tees, the course plays to a par-73 and measures 5,254 yards. The longest hole on the course is #4, a par-5 that plays to 536 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 13, a par-3 that plays to 203 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 5, the 440 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Oakhurst Country Club is # 13, the par-3 that measures 213 yards from the tips.

The course closed in June 2016.

The course went into foreclosure. The bank sold the property, 165 acres, clubhouse, swimming pool, and other structures for a reported $650,000. The new owners plan to lease out the golf course, Manor House restaurant and bar, and an Olympic-size swimming pool—possibly through three separate agreements. The course may reopen in 2018.

this is a low budget operation and that quickly becomes evident when you step out of your vehicle after parking in the lot. I stayed on the north end of Myrtle so I had about 1.5 hour drive to get to this course. Played it in a tournament or I would not have made the trip. The setting is beutilful as it is located on an old plantatin with some of the origingal (I beleive) buildings still there. The old oaks are fascinating. The course layout itself is OK and the greens - while cut and putts ran somewhat true - were pretty furry so speed was impossible to guage and short putts could easily slide offline. The fairways were in questionable shape in many places and the tee boxes were a disaster. Drop zones (for the tourney) were not marked so you made your best guess. The yardage books ($2 or $3) were simply hand drawings run off on a copy machine. God thing I still had my old one from 2003 when I last played this course. The parking lot was pretty much gravel and the pro shop (such as it is) and clubhouse were functional at best. One big positive - in my opinion - was the friendliness of the staff that day. While I certainly will ot make any effort to drive down to play this course again, it serves as a low cost option ($25 was the rate, I believe) for the locals. One extra benefit was the drive through Georgetown. The is the most perfect feeling when you are driving down a .5 - 1.0 mile oak tree lined roadway. Picture worthy!

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Worse than average course for the area

Wedgefield is basically my home course. Its under new management and does need some work, but its coming along. The greens were in pretty bad shape a year ago but they are better now. The course is very challenging because of the length of the par fours. Great layout and fun to play except if its been raining to much, a couple holes do not dry well (usually not a problem). I believe the price is only $25, but that may be a local rate. Its not as manicured as some of the other Myrtle Beach area courses, but its half the price to play. I really believe thats a bargain. Hopefully, being under better management, this course will only continue to improve.
