Detailed description of Twin Lakes Golf Course, Oaks Course

Twin Lakes is a Public, 36 hole public golf course facility in Clifton, Virginia. Twin Lakes has two 18-hole golf courses (The Lakes Course and The Oaks Course). They offer two quite different golfing experiences making Twin Lakes a great choice for any golfer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twin Lakes, The Lakes golf course first opened for play in 1967. The course was redesigned by Denis Griffiths.

The Lakes Course (1967) is the original course on the property. 6 holes were redesigned in 1998 to coincide with the opening of the Oaks Course. It is the more forgiving of the two courses. Although there is a smattering of trees throughout, for the most part you can grip it and rip it off of the tee. The 10th, 15th and 17th holes are the only three with trouble on both sides of the fairway. As the name implies, the course is designed around two lakes which can certainly attract the poorly struck golf ball. However, in general, the Lakes Course should certainly be the choice of the golfer who is unsure of where his/her tee ball is going to end up. In 2004, 13 new tees were added to 10 of the holes. This addition greatly modernized the style of the course by adding greater flexibility to the choice of tees and, therefore, adding enjoyment to a larger variety of golfers.

Twin Lakes, The Lakes Course plays to 6,788 yards and a par-73. The course rating is 72.0 with a slope rating of 132.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Twin Lakes, The Oaks Golf Course first opened for play in 1998. The course was designed by Denis Griffiths.

Twin Lakes, The Oaks Course (1998), as you might surmise, winds through the many oaks trees that are on the property. This should almost certainly be the choice for a golfer who does not hit the ball very far but always straight. Although it is actually slightly longer than the Lakes Course, most of that distance is made up on two long par 5's and on long par 3. The majority of holes actually play shorter than their counterpart on the Lakes Course. This does not take anything away from the challenge as the Oaks Course is certainly more difficult than the Lakes Course. In addition to the aforementioned woods there are 56 bunkers and 7 different water hazards which produce 3 forced carries to add to the difficulty. Finally the greens are much smaller, more undulating and better protected by mounds and bunkering than the Lakes Course. All in all it is a spectacular championship design.

Twin Lakes, The Oaks Golf Course plays to 6,710 yards and a par-71 . The course rating is 73.0 with a slope rating of 139.

In the DC area for the weekend and found this 36 hole complex that didn’t need an early morning (44 degrees) tee time. Being windy I was advised to play the Oaks course from the White tees 3,054yd / 70.4 / 134 Par 35/36 because of the trees. Being the newer course, fairway/green side sand bunkers were in good condition and well placed. Was told conditions are ready for winter and will be fuzzy and slower but, we’re playing golf. This tree lined layout is a little short on yardages but not on course management with doglegs. Every hole is anything but straight away and challenges from the tee to we’ll protected greens. The score card has a very discript hole layout on four (4) tee box choices ranging from 4,652yd to 6,715yds. The tips/views are very helpful on playing each hole to you best ability. The #2 432yd Par 4 starts out with a 200yd river carry to a uphill green and plays well to it’s Hcp 2 rating. Rest of the par 4 yardages are under 374 yds / Whites so stay in the short grass and Par is yours. Back 9 starts out with 415yd Par 4 having water RH side/ trees LH that narrows up your landing area on this Hcp 3 hole. The #14 is a 556yd Par 5 and mainly protects it’s Hcp 1 ranking with length and traps up to the green. The #15 is a 215yd Par 3 that had the wind in my face and nothing but the driver to get me home. (Short but safe). Finishing with a short 504yd Par 5, water down the RH side sets up for a friendly Par to a enjoyable day on the short grass. Ended up shooting 38/39 w/30putts as hitting all fairways was a big advantage on this windy day.

A well laid out course. Most holes are challenging for the average golfer, and the terrain is rolling and varied. Aeration had been done recently, so it was difficult to accurately assess greens and fairways.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
