Detailed description of Grant Park Golf Club

Grant Park Golf Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Grant Park Golf Club opened for play in 1920. The course was designed by George Hansen. The Grant Park Golf Clubhouse was built in the early 1860s, originally the farm home of the Horace Nathan Fowle family.

Grant is the oldest of the Milwaukee County Parks system courses and is located on the lakefront bluffs in the city of South Milwaukee, overlooking Lake Michigan. Grant's quaint little layout is known for its mature trees, short positional par fours and large difficult greens. This is a great course to play on hot sunny days because of the occasional lake breezes which cool everything down. Being a public course in an urban area means that Grant GC is usually pretty busy with golfers of all skill levels so, allow yourself some time when playing this course.

This is a short course. The longest hole is only about 400 yards but the large contoured putting greens more than make up for the short yardages. Contoured and often multileveled, these greens will test your putting skills. Being below the hole is advised on the larger ones. The shorter par 4's on this course are usually more about position. The distances on these holes can often tempt you to cut corners with your driver or fairway woods, but be advised that the mature tree stands and deep roughs will make you pay for ill executed shots.

The greens and fairways on this course are usually kept in good shape although the amount of play they get can sometimes leave them a little rugged.

Par for the course is 67. From the back tees the course plays to 5,213 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,112 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 18, a par-4 that plays to 420 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 17, a par-3 that plays to 100 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 3, a 405 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Grant Park Golf Club is # 17, the short 100 yard par-3.

This is a relatively short course, but definitely not a pitch-and-putt. It will challenge almost any casual golfer, and even some who are more than casual players. If you have a problem with hitting a straight ball, this may not be a good course to play. The fairways are relatively narrow, and there are a lot of trees. Perhaps because of that, the course is one of the most spectacular ones you will see in Wisconsin in the fall. And despite the fact that the course is within a good 3-wood of Lake Michigan, there is only one water hazard, which appears beside the second fairway. For the money, it is one of the best values in the Milwaukee area, but don't expect to get in a quickie. Many Milwaukee public courses (and especially Grant) can get very slow.

I've played this course several times. Milwaukee County Parks Courses are usually in fair condition, but this one seems to be a bit better kept. It is advertised as a test for a straight hitter, and it is true. A good hitter will probably keep the Driver in the bag. One of the early par 3's has a sidesaddle green--almost impossible to get in regulation unless you put a small draw at the end--the green is obscured by bushes! And for $7 for twilight rates--it's a bargain. This is not a resort course--not a travel destination, but a great visit if you are in town...
