Detailed description of Dothan Country Club

Dothan Country Club, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Dothan, Alabama.

The Dothan Country Club was organized in 1923, at the present location and on February 24, 1924 the first round of golf was played on the course. The course was designed by Hugh Moore.

When the course was originally constructed, the greens were composed of sand. In 1933 they were converted to grass. Many early tales describe mule drawn mowers cutting the grass in the fairways.

In 2002 the Dothan County Club golf course went through major golf course renovations. Bill Bergin redesigned the course.

Over the years the club has hosted many notable personalities such as golfers Jack Nicholas, Arnold Palmer, Gardner Dickinson, Julius Boros, Bob Tway, Stewart Cink, and Johnny Potts. Numbers of national political leaders, athletic coaches, and entertainers have enjoyed the hospitality of the Club and its members.

The golfing world knows Dothan Country Club as the birthplace and home of the Press Thornton Future Masters. The first tournament was played in 1950 with Don Kennington of Dothan the first winner.

An impressive list of golfing greats who have competed in the tournament continues to grow and includes past U.S. Open Champions Hubert Green and Jerry Pate, Masters Winner Larry Mize, PGA Champions Bob Tway, Mark Brooks, and Shawn Micheel, British Open Winner Ben Curtis, along with Tour Stars Andy Bean, Bruce Leitzke, Bill Rogers, Allen Miller, Mac McClendon, Buddy Gardner, Eddie Pierce, Steve Melnyk, Joey Hager, Wayne Player, Phil Hancock, Gary Koch, Hal Sutton, Chris Couch, David Jackson, Chip Beck, Curtis Strange, Steve Lowery, David Duval, Vance Veazey, Stewart Cink, Birney Baird, Robert Floyd, Bubba Dickerson, Charles Howell III, and Casey Whittenburg.

The Dothan Country Club golf course plays to a par-71 and a maximum distance of 6,403 yards. The course rating is 70.3 and the slope rating is 126.

The course is in great shape and offers enough challenges to make it interesting but player-friendly enough to be rewarding to the high- handicapper. Although a private course, it is receptive to non-members and sponsors several guest-invited tournaments yearly. It is the "Home of the Futures Masters" with several of today's professionals having participated in its tournament. It is one of five area courses and I would place it near the top. The Robert Jones course would be the greatest competition.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level
