Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club previously known as Royal Dunes Golf Club,is an 18 hole semi-private golf course located in Maricopa, Arizona. The location is twenty-five minutes south of Phoenix's Sky Harbor International Airport. It was a private men's club for its first six years of existence, where members included major championship winners Mark Calcavecchia and Steve Jones.
The course first opened for play in 2002. The course was designed by Brian Curley, Lee E. Schmidt, and Fred Couples.
Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club sprawls across 320 acres of rolling hills covered in native grasses. The landscape has hidden pockets of sandy hollows within the undulating mounds of the golf course, giving the appearance of dunes. The terrain perfectly complements the links-style layout. There are carefully contoured bunkers strategically placed throughout and well-manicured, undulating greens. In addition to the challenging game, the golf course offers wide, open views in every direction. The Gila River Indian Reservation to the north provides panoramic mountain vistas. Southern Dunes Golf Club also has a double-ended practice tee with multiple targets and a six green short game complex.
Southern Dunes Golf Club plays to 7,243 yards from the tips. The course rating from the back tees is 71.9 with a slope rating of 128. Par for Southern Dunes Golf Club golf course is 72.

In Arizona it doesn't get any better than Southern Dunes. Magnificent course condition, great clubhouse facilities and a wonderful staff from top to bottom. Anyone who doesn't enjoy their experience here is either comatose or life challenged.

This course has a lot of what I value. It is specifically designed for walking with gravel paths that go directly from greens to next tee box, rarely can you see another hole from the one you are playing, there is no development around the course, and it is an excellent layout that was in great shape. Very challenging, strategic course.

One of my favorite courses and one of Arizona's best in my opinion. Very challenging course to play, if you game is on it is a very rewarding experience. If you game is off, your in for a long but memorable day.

One of the hidden gems in the Phoenix Valley. Would be more popular and priced higher if not so far to drive. Well worth it though.

Great course. Important to play from the correct tees - as the traps are strategically located. Keep it on the 'green stuff' - you will have a wonderful round. Hit it off the fairways, you will wish you were in one of the 109 sand traps. I think the 14th hole has 14 traps. One caution - since this course is only a few miles from a dairy that milks 200,000 cows a day - - if the wind is blowing from that direction - - you will experience the fragrant "dairy-air" - along with some flies. But, the course is worth it - - and a real surprise out in the middle of 'nowhere'. This is a quality course.

Excellent challenge. Caters to the good player, but playable even for the shorter hitter from the appropriate tees. Aptly named for having tons of sand. Tight lies in fairawys and greenside. Fast but receptive enough and true-rolling greens. I will play here again when needing the challenge, or to be humbled.

Everything was in excellent condition except the bunkers. They looked great but most were very sparse as far as sand is concerned.

Need more sand in bunkers. Pace of play was slow. Staff was excellent.

Formerly private course is now public. Greens fee includes unlimited range balls. Run by Troon Golf, in their typical excellent fashion. The only disadvantage is location, not very close to populated areas. The greens were very fast (they said 12) but soft, some with very considerable slope. There are some places pretty close to the playing area where you can't find your ball, in deep Bermuda rough and thick, tall grasses. For me, it played harder than the slope indicated.

A hidden gem! Recently became TROON managed public course. Well worth the drive to experience a beautiful and challenging track. Bunkers everywhere and lightening fast greens require you to bring your "A" game.

We chose this course to play 2 days over the others we played. The "Dunes" in its name is a harsh reality. I think I got to view almost all of them, up close and personal! Great time and would definitely return if ever in the area.
