North Kern Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Bakersfield, California.
The course is a short drive from downtown Bakersfield. North Kern Golf Course first opened for play in 1953. The generous fairways are lined with trees that have matured over the years. The greens are undulated, well bunkered and provide challenging target. The golf course combines a quality mix of long par 3's and par 4's with an opportunity for scoring on the reachable par 5's. The golf course is friendly for golfers at all skill levels, with alternate tee boxes for ladies and seniors.
Watch out for the 6th hole, a 443yard par 4 that plays uphill and into the wind with bunkers along the green.
The length of the par 4's make up for the lack of water. The signature hole is #16, a 468-yard, par 4, which calls for a long iron to a small green.
Par for the course is 72. From the back tees the course plays to 6754 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5582 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 4, a par-5 that plays to 537 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 17, a par-3 that plays to 178 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 6, a 443 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 18, a 496 yard par-5.

County course that sees alot of play. Pretty flat with few sand traps, most of which you can putt out, and relatively wide fairways. Speaking of which, your drive gets tremendous roll in August, but the hardpan can play havoc with your 2nd shot. Nice people on the course and in the shop.

I play North Kern Golf Course weekly because I enjoy the staff and the ladies club.
Since the Pro, Jim Phillips and his wife Kara, have taken over the course and Pro Shop/Club house, both has improved immensley. They have improved everything, especially their main product, the golf course. The trees are trimmed, the greens are in good shape and the price is very reasonable. They are constantly working on the course in some capacity. They have made improvements in the club house by painting and adding flat screen TVs. They serve great hamburgers and fries, as well as other great items on the menu, with the friendly faces from the ladies in the kitchen. Plus, they have put on a new roof and painted inside and out. This is a county course but we have some of the best county courses here in Kern County and this is one of them.
North Kern Golf Course was in a state of neglect and needed much updating and improving when the last manager left. Those improvements have been made in all accounts in every aspect. Jim and his wife Kara are wonderful to the staff and members, as well as providing excellent support for all tournaments locally and support of Junior Golf programs. They care about their product and make sure all enjoy their visit.
I recommend North Kern Golf Course to everyone that is looking for a good golfing experience and friendly faces. The course is surrounded by grape vineyards and Almond trees. It is also by the Lerdo Prison, so it is easy to find and a short drive from anywhere in the county. So, if you have not played this course before or in the last couple of years, come out and see what is now one of the best county courses in Kern County. They have grouped with Buena Vista Golf Course (Taft) for the mens club and have a strong supported mens club monthly tournaments at the two courses.

Like many course in this area; never enough sand in the bunkers. They allow as many as a six-some and this slows the pace of the round. No merchandise in the proshop. The staff acts as if they hate being there.

I play this course each week. This county-owned course is the poorest of all the county courses in the area. I agree that the course is in better shape since the change in operators. Greens are either good or really bad and very inconsistent. Good course based on price to keep your game in shape.
