Desert Dunes Golf Course

Played this course in the morning of a holiday weekend and it was a bit crowded. We had a twosome join us and unfortunately they were very slow and were playing from a tee box not suited to their game. Consequently we were warned on the 5th hole to speed up and that did help a bit. The layout is good and fairly challenging with the heavy desert vegetation making a good number of holes very tight with no bailout. The greens had been over-seeded and were pretty good overall with just a few bare spots. Bunkers were ok but a bit muddy. I liked the course overall but the long round probably affected my opinion of the course. If I lived nearby, I would play it more often but since I have to travel from San Diego, I would pick other courses. Very nice management, good starter, and nice staff in the restaurant.

We lucked out with a great summer rate, a relatively cool day (98 high) and very light wind. Under those conditions, this is a great course at a great price. Course was in much better condition than I expected for July in Palm Springs. Everything was tidy, fairways very nice, and the greens were smooth. I've played here many times before, so I know it can get very windy; but if the weather cooperates it is an outstanding value.

This area can be very windy and it was during most of the round. The greens were hard, dry and fast. This reminded me of playing in Texas which I can do without traveling to Palm Springs area. The staff was very pleasant. Might play again but not in the wind. Is that possible?

The only reason i rated the difficulty as a con is that this course is in an area that is extremly windy. If you can play this course on a day that isn't windy in this area it would be terrific.

Very nice desert course. Good variety of holes. Well conditioned considering the hot, dry, windy weather in the Palm Springs area in June. Some dry areas in the fairways but the greens were fast but receptive. Good pace of play (3:30) on a 8:00 round in the summer. I will play here again next time I'm in the area.

I have played this course three times and it does not get any better. The pace of play is excruciatingly slow. This particular round took five and one half hours. There was only one ranger on the course and until they improve the pace of play, it is not worth paying a dime to play on this tract.

The Desert Dunes course is in an area off Palm Drive and I-10 which has not seen much development, so it feels more remote than it is.

I had played 2 other courses earlier in the week, and Desert Dunes had a distinctly different feel to it. The type of vegetation lining or separating the fairways was a low growing, native desert type shrubbery which was very thick and prickly, and not conducive to entering on foot, or even reaching into to retrieve an errant shot. If your ball goes in there, you may want to forget it, since who knows what varmits are living in there, and I have got the scratches to prove that it is hazardous even without encountering a varmit.

There was plenty of thick green grass from tee to green, but not as lush as I had encountered on the other courses I had played previously in the week (Tahquitz Creek Golf Resort in Palm Springs and Canyon South Golf Course, also in Palm).

The only palm trees are at the course entrance, with none on the course, which I thought was almost mandatory for this area, and there are few flowering shrubs or beds to add that "wow" factor. Still, not bad at all.

I liked the fact that although there are only a few holes with trees on the course, you could rarely see the adjacent fairways because of the layout, mounding and vegetation. The fairways are generous for the most part, conditioning is good, and the course provides a moderate challenge for the average golfer.

As mentioned previously, there is no development around the course, so this is somewhat unique for the Palm Springs area which has many courses that are completely lined with homes. Put this on your list for a nice variation in your Palm Springs golf experience.

During the late summer greens are mowed everyother day, played on the off day so greens were like velcro. Rough was cut low in preparation for the overseeding. Drinking water needs to be more availible on the course.
