Detailed description of Montebello Country Club

Montebello Country Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Montebello, California.

The Montebello Country Club golf course opened in 1928. The course was designed by Max Behr. In 1941 the City of Montebello purchased the course for use as a municipal facility. William F. Bell redesigned five holes in 1962. The 120 acres, 18-hole public championship course was again remodeled in 1998-99 reopening on May 7, 1999. The remodel included the addition of 3 lakes all new greens, tees, bunkers, and cart paths. Architects for the remodel were David Rainville and Gary Bye.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees, the course plays to 6,616 yards. From the forward tees, the course measures 5,624 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 3, a par-5 that plays to 531 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 9, a par-3 that plays to 105 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, a 461 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole at Montebello is # 17, a 496 yard par-5.

The Montebello Country Club golf course was designed on and around one large hill, which makes the terrain heavily sloped. Even on the holes that appear somewhat flat, this slope will come into play, affecting not only your shots, which will tend to drift away from the top of the hill but your putts as well. The key to scoring low at Montebello is to maintain solid course management through the first eight holes. Six holes measure over 400 yards, including #4, a 461-yard, par 4, requiring a pair of good shots to reach the green in two. Hole #7, a 380-yard, par 4, requires a blind approach shot to an elevated green at least 100 feet above the lowest point on the fairway. The back nine plays a little bit shorter, but the finishing holes can be real challenging, including #14, a 216-yard, par 3. One of the many features is its double greens on some holes. These aren't like the double greens you'd find at St. Andrews in Scotland, but two completely different greens altogether. One day you may hit to one green, and on another trip, you may find yourself hitting to the other green. This enables the maintenance crew to keep the greens in better condition.

I had never played this course before though I'd driven by it many times over the years. I enjoyed my round. Our group was given the Senior Rate in spite of the fact that none of us had Senior Cards issued by the City of Montebello. Without the Senior Rate I feel the course is overpriced for a Senior, plus a cart, compared with other courses in the area that are, in my opinion, comparable as a golfing experience.

At this time, course condition is improving nicely. The tee boxes have been seeded and the grass is coming in nicely, the fairways and rough have been mowed, there is new sand in the traps and the greens were punched about a month ago. In a few weeks, I would say that the coure will be in very good shape. It's not always this way so I will try to make it out more often. This is a muni course so expectations can't be too high. I play often here and haven't seen this much work going on in awhile, so I was pleasantly surprised. The other reviews are in general, true but again, there has been some improvements. I think the greens will always be a bit on the slow side but with the warmer months ahead it should speed up a bit. Don't let the slope rating fool you. It plays a bit tougher than 121. Overall, I enjoy the course. It's the best one in the area by far.

First let me state that the pace of play is fast because the club I play with tees off at sunrise every Sun morn. We move along briskly, finishing in 3-3 1/2hrs. I can't account for any group behind us. Also, I say priced fairly because we're not in daylight savings so we tee off at 6:30AM and start on the 2nd hole to further speed play, thefore, we play for $38 w/cart. That said, it is a city course but I've seen and played a lot worse. The only real gripes I have are that the greens are always a bit slow, except on hot sunny afternoons when it's dried out a bit. The other gripe I have is that the bunkers are not sand traps, they are more like soil/dirt traps. It's a fair course but I think it plays a little tougher than the slope rating. There are mature trees that you must stay out of, water comes into play on several holes and the bunkers are always a threat. That said, I like the course. It's the best one in the L.A. area for $55 w/cart on a weekend. The Sunday morning pro at the shop is always good for laughs. He could do stand-up comedy as a side job, he's that funny.

I play this course often because my friends and I are men's club members there but the conditioning is poor, greens are often bumpy or damaged, no definition in fairways/rough, tee boxes are in poor shape and often tee markers placed in awkward spots. I used to play every Sunday but now only go once a month. Too many other nice courses to choose from to spend money here if you don't have to.

Montebello's 4 pars can be tough for short hitters, but they will have no problem with 3 & 5 par holes.
