Detailed description of California Golf & Art Country Club

California Golf & Art Country Club, originally named Cherry Hills Golf Course, is a Semi-Private, 18 hole golf course located in Sun City, California.

The course first opened for play in 1963. This old, traditional course is the only Milton Coggins design in California.

The layout, originally set alone, now is in the middle of a development of single-family homes, most of which were built in 1975. Water hazards come into play on two holes.

Black tees: par-72, 7,137 yards, 73.4 / 122
Blue     tees: par-72, 6,688 yards, 71.4 / 117
White tees: par-72, 6,307 yards, 69.3 / 113(M), 76.5 / 126(W)

I have been playing this course for the last five years and it is in the best shape since I started playing it. The greens are very good, fairways are coming around. They have been watering like crazy all summer. A good over seeding of the fairways would be nice. The traps actually have sand.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Ranks with the best in this price level, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

The course has no real base to drawn on. The members are old (65+) and will not pay what it takes to make this a great track. It started out as a great course when Del Webb owned it and plowed the money into it to sell houses. After Del Webb left they turned the course over to the members. At that point the course started to go down. The members were not willing to pay what it took to keep the course at a great level. Several years later it had turned into a dog track. In came a group of Korean investors and took over the course. They plowed several million into it and got it looking fairly nice. The income generated could not keep it going at that level. Management doesn't have a clue as to how to operate a facility. They spend alot of money in all the wrong places. And that's how you get what you have now. It's a good layout that is ugly and cheap.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing, Worse than average course for the area

Management doesn't have a clue. Course needs water and a full maintenance staff. The owners have ruined one of the oldest and best layout in the area. No food service any more and nothing worth buying in the pro shop.

Greens are being renovated by sodding with bermuda. Will be better someday. Fairways have may areas with out grass. Don't ever go off the fairways as you will be in dirt. The rough is minimal. Yardage markers at tees are old, barely visible, and the yardage is suspect. Sand traps have no sand; like hitting off of concrete. Course is now called California Golf & Art CC.
