Detailed description of Mare Island Golf Club, CLOSED 2019

Mare Island Golf Course is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Vallejo, California.

Mare Island Golf Club was established in 1892, making it the oldest course west of the Mississippi. The Mare Island Golf Club is the legacy of the government's decision last decade to close down scores of military bases around the country. Bay Area golfers were among the clear winners when Mare Island became available for public play with the closing of Mare Island Naval Station.

As a reminder of its military days, there are ten ammunition bunkers scattered throughout the golf course property. One bunker houses the maintenance facility, and a second bunker serves as the turn shack. See if you can find the remaining eight during your round.

The clubhouse, Building 658, was originally constructed by W.P.A. Labor in 1936. The building served as a time signal station and radio frequency monitoring station for overseas transmissions. It was one of two buildings on Mare Island Naval Shipyard to receive the first call of the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941. The building was remolded using non-appropriated funds for use as the M.I.N.S. golf clubhouse. The remodeled building was dedicated on March 5, 1961.

In the year 2000, nine new holes were re-introduced by Robin Nelson. Today, Mare Island Golf Course is an 18-hole golf course designed to challenge golfers of all abilities.

The renovated course was designed to challenge golfers of all abilities. Half of the holes wind through tree-lined fairways, while the other half offers a more links-style journey. The majority of holes offer a magnificent view of San Pablo Bay, the Napa River, Mt. Tamalpais and on a clear day the Golden Gate Bridge

The Mare Island Golf Club golf course measures 6,150 yards from the blue tees. The 18 hole course features two distinct layouts. The front 9 is a more traditional course design, with small greens and tight, tree-lined fairways. The back 9, redesigned by Robin Nelson, is a links-style challenge, featuring rolling hills, undulating fairways, and beautiful greens.

Mare Island is completely surrounded by water. You are sure to take in many gorgeous, seaside vistas. Gorgeous views of San Pablo Bay and the Sacramento River Delta await you from nearly every angle of this 18-hole links-style golf course.

The course closed in 2019.

As of February 2019, the course is not open and has not been open for several weeks. Reportedly the course is $600,000 behind on taxes, water has been turned off, and golf carts hauled off. All signs are present that the course is either permanently closed, or at a minimum, will be closed for a long time But, who knows, a nostalgic investor may show up.

Update.

The nostalgic investor did not show up. Instead, a developer showed up and purchased the 170 acre golf course in June 2019.

I played at a special rate, however they always have a great deal which includes a cart. The staff was friendly and the food is good. The clubhouse isn't much to mention, but you get some history w/Mare Island as it is the oldest course west of the Mississippi.

This is a full 18 hole golf course. The front nine is a tree lined course, while the back nine is basically a links type course. Prior to the 1990's, it was a private military nine hole course.
