Day 55 - 100 days, 100 courses (Tuesday, May 7, 2019)

The theme of the day was Southern Hospitality. I pulled up to the first tee and Tom came up to me and asked if I was alone and wanted to join their threesome. Tom, Thomas and Eddie treated me like they had known me their whole lives. They joked with me, they razzed me and even encouraged me.

Really fun morning. I shot an 87 with only 1 lost ball but I ended with 4 sixes which was discouraging.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again

Played Southbridge Golf Club 9-20-13 while in Savannah at a reunion. Started at 0745 and finished in 2.5 hours. Very few others playing at that time of day.

I paid $30, based on hotel concierege intervention, otherwise would have been $50, and honestly, the course is not worth $50.

Course is a Rees Jones design from 1989, and is showing its age. The course itself is in decent shape, but the clubhouse is getting a bit raggedy, with visibly rotted window frames, some missing glass, flaking paint, etc. The cart paths are an invitation to back injury: there are numerous root incursions, tilted concrete slabs, potholes and sizable gaps in pavement. Drivers, beware!

The greens were pretty good, with only a few burned spots, which is pretty good considering the local climate and the time of year. Most greens were moderately contoured and sloped, and all are pretty big. Fairways were good, but with some damp spots. All are generous in the landing area. Bunkers were excellent. Tee boxes for seniors, which I am, were not so good: all were crowned, both from side to side and front to back. It was hard to find a level spot. Layout goes through a sizable housing development, and in a few cases, the homes are quite close to the fairway: uncomfortably so if you're a slicer/hooker. There is also considerable distance between holes, such that I would not recommend walking for seniors or anyone with infirmities. For example, it's a three-minute cart ride at full speed from the clubhouse to the first tee!

Pro shop is modestly stocked with logo merchandise, but has the essentials.

Staff was excellent.

Overall, I liked the course...just needs some TLC and $$$.

It's been several years since I had played Southbridge, and my memories weren't very good (always wet, poor greens & fairways, pricey) but this time I was pleasantly surprised. The course was NOT wet, the fairways were in good condition, and the greens were very good. It's still not really a bargin, but I felt I got my money's worth, and I'd play it again. There's not many Reese Jones courses that you can play for $50...

Bottom line: I would play again, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
