Detailed description of Wailua Golf Course
Wailua Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in LIHUE, Hawaii.
Wailua Golf Course first opened for play in the 1930's as a 9-hole golf course. The course was expanded to an 18 hole, par-72, championship layout in 1961 by course designer, Toyo Shirai.
Wailua Golf Course sits with views of the Pacific Ocean on one side with mountain views in the background. The front nine holes are fairly flat and wide open, while the back nine holes feature elevation changes. Tropical coconut and pine trees, as well as numerous sand bunkers, are found throughout the course. The greens are undulating and well-protected, making them very challenging.
The course plays to a maximum distance of 6,991 yards for a course rating of 73.3 and a slope rating of 129.
Blue tees: 6,991 yards, course rating 73.3, slope rating 129.
White tees: 6,585 yards, course rating 71.3, slope rating 125.
Red tees: 5,974 yards, course rating 73.4, slope rating 119.

This course is too long for a senior player like myself...too hard on the ego. They should add senior tees and move the woman's red tees up. Relatively flat front nine with a few more elevations on the back but enough hazards to challenge various shots. Not a country club setting at all but views of ocean on course are nice.

I have played this course on numerous vacations to Kauai and always enjoy it. It is one of the best golf values in Hawaii. Conditioning varies dramatically from year to year, but the track is still fun and challenging. The back 9 is far superior to the front 9.

In excellent shape for a muni course. Price is about 1/2 of the private courses (Kaamaina rate).

This is a municipal course that offers significant discounts to locals and local seniors and juniors. It is a challenge to get a tee time that is exactly what you want. But the course is in really good condition and has great scenery of the ocean and the nearby mountains. The staff is not very friendly to tourists, but once you get on the course you forget about that. There is a lot of variety in fairways and approaches. Be prepared for rain showers. The carts are propane and do not have weather shields for your clubs, so bring a club cover for your golf bag. It's Kauai, so just relax and enjoy it!
