Detailed description of Marion Golf Club

Marion Golf Club is a Public, 9 hole golf course located in Marion, Massachusetts. It's close to the Providence/New Bedford/Boston area, or if you're heading out to the Cape.

Marion Golf Club opened for play in 1906. The course was designed by George Thomas.

Although the course has no water hazards, nearly every hole has a stone wall across the fairway with a sand bunker built into its side. This is REAL, classic golf! The 6th hole into the wind of Buzzard's Bay will test your mettle for on the 430 yd. par 4. The greens are small, appear flat, but with unseen breaks, will challenge you all day. This is a parkland style of course, not very dense in the way of trees, mostly open, very enjoyable, an old classic and loads of fun.

Blue tees: par-34, 2,695 yards

Red tees: par-39, 2,695 yards

The following was written by Charles McGrath, May 22, 2011, in The New York Time Golf Blog.

Marion Golf Club - just down the road from the fancier and far-better-known Kittansett Club - looks at first glance like nothing much. The turf is a random mix of grass and weeds, and right in front of the first tee, there’s a squarish, unimaginative bunker that serves no purpose. The ninth hole, a dinky par 3 that’s visible from the first tee, has a rock wall in front of it, flashed with sand. But as you play your way around, coming upon other rock walls and old-fashioned-looking bunkers, catching a glimpse of Marion harbor behind the sixth green, you realize the place is a forgotten gem, hidden in a time warp. It was built in 1906 by George C. Thomas Jr., who went on to design Riviera and Bel-Air in Los Angeles, and it’s been left pretty much untouched ever since. It’s an odd, funky little place where worseness edges over into something like greatness.

Great course that is challenging with it's Stone walls. You will not be able to chip and run much here. I love playing here every couple of weeks. Bruce the proprietor is a great guy and always has the greens in tip top shape. Marion is a great place to go when you just want to go out and use every club in your bag and you don't want to pay too much.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
