I arrived at the course at 6:10 AM for a 7 AM tee time. Rain kept me waiting but gave me an opportunity to observe the grounds crew. What professionals!! They really keep the course in great shape. Additionally, unlike many of the other area courses, the grounds crew was GONE when I teed off at 7 AM.
The main doors to the club house/restaurant were closed when I arrived at 6:10 AM. However, at 6:30 AM it would have been nice to have been able to get a cup of tea and a roll.
The staff in the Pro Shop were bright and cheery. The young woman at the window offered me a towel to dry off the cart seat before I could ask for one -- a nice courteous touch, don-t you think?
At $65, which I believe was a reduced rate, I thought the greens fee was pricey. Almost every where you looked there was an emphasis on playing quickly (clocks and sign reminders). On the front nine I played with 2 gentlemen from Concord and play went at a quick but unrushed pace. The back nine was another story. As a single, my playing partners left for work, I expected to play quickly but patiently because I was a single. Without any request from me, 2 foursomes (one on 11 and one on 13) asked me to play through, which I thought was thoughtful and in keeping with golf courtsey. From 16 to 18 I was behind a female foursome who had a deadly combination of being slow and in desprate need of lessons. A Ranger appeared on the 18th tee and asked me how I was doing. I explained the foursome in front of me and, apparantly per the Ranger, these "players" are the bane/canker/plague of Eastman. So although they turned what should have been a just slightly over 3 hour round of golf into 3 and 3/4 hours (the last three holes were agony), my understanding from the Ranger was that they are the exception, not the rule.
Also, it would have been nice to have seen a cart girl. Maybe I started too early. Well there is always next year.
