Port Kent Golf Course is a Public, 9 hole golf course located high on the cliffs overlooking Lake Champlain at Port Kent, New York. The course sits in the northeastern portion of the Adirondack Park near Ausable Chasm and the Port Kent ferry.
Port Kent Golf Course first opened for play in 1912. The course was designed by Channing Floyd. Originally named the Champlain Country Club and later known as the Northern Pines Golf Course, The course was a full-length 18-hole course
The financial crash of the 1930's however, adversely affected the golf course which passed through several ownerships over the years. The course gradually deteriorated and finally all maintenance stopped, allowing nature to reclaim the area.
Then in the early 1960's, Richard Harmon who "discovered the property" formed a corporation and immediately began clearing the property and reconstructing the course. In 1963, he reopened the Port Kent Golf Course to the public for play. The nine-hole par 30 course with an up and back design, small greens and chocolate drops as hazard definitely has its own character.
There are many on-going changes (as of this posting 14 May, 2010) at Port Kent Golf Course. The original front 9 have been lengthened and now consist of only 5 holes. 4 new holes were opened at the beginning of the 2009 season which greatly increased the yardage of the course. This new design and yardage has moved the Port Kent Golf Course from being an executive course to a regulation length 9-hole course.
But wait...there are more than 9-holes. Currently they have 12 holes and are expanding to become a full 18 hole course. Holes 10-12 are rotated with the "front nine" holes so that on any given day you will see a different hole or two as you play "todays" nine. This rotation helps with course maintenance and results in a better golf experience. For now, additional tee positions allow you to double loop for an 18-hole round. The long term plan is for an 18 hole course.
