Detailed description of Little River Farm

Little River Farm Golf Course, is a Public, 18 hole golf course located in Carthage, North Carolina, 5 miles north of Pinehurst Village.

Little River Farm Golf Course first opened for play in 1996. The course was designed by Dan Maples.

One of the area’s Premier Courses, a Golf Digest "award winner" and chosen by The Washington Golf Monthly as "A Best New Course for 1996." This course is special in the Pinehurst area because it was partially constructed from a horse farm. A unique landmark in the world of equestrian sports has now became a legendary world-class golf course. Sculptured from 450 acres of rolling hills and featuring nearly 200-foot elevation changes, narrow rivers and thick forests, this course is a must play for visiting golfers.

We have played here many times over the last 25 years or so. They rate themselves as a 4 1/2 star golf course. That is definitely far from true. Tee boxes and greens need to be rebuilt. Dead patches and many, many ball marks on greens. I suspect the greens are in such bad shape that aerating isn't going to help. Cart paths are horrible......like so many asphalt paths on courses with pine tree roots ruining the paths. All of these things suggest the course is not doing well financially. Several years ago, they built a really nice clubhouse with many rental condos attached on both sides. They promote 'golf packages' but what a disappointment it must be for someone coming there for the first time only to find the golf course in such poor condition. They might return because of accommodations, but not for the golf.

Would travel: 0-10 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I won't play again, I wouldn't recommend this course

Played here on a cool Saturday in February, on our annual retreat from winter up north. Cost us $25. Course is very nice, and the fairways were gtreen, even at this time of year. Greens had been aerated, rolled and sanded, so they were not at all representative of in-season conditions. Greens are generally pretty large, have some undulations, but not severely so. Fairways are pretty wide and receptive, except for a few fairly tight (and short) ones. This is a course you can score on, first time out. Plenty of bunkers, and the few I hit were not in great shape: I fond the sand to be very coarse and rough. Overall, nothing too tricky, just decent golf. Clubhouse/bar is very nice, with an accommodating staff. Pro shop is well stocked with merchandise, and the check-in process was very nicely handled. I recommend!

Lots of blind shots - you'll score much better the 3rd or 4th time you play it. Clubhouse and accomodations excellent. Was part of a large group who stayed here for 3 days. Everyone on the staff was friendly and helpful, from front desk people to wait staff to pro shop staff. I'd come back again.

The front nine is wide open, with some water that will come into play. But the back nine is more challenging and makes you think about your shot. Forced carries and some water makes this a great course. Wide fairways and great greens make this a must play when visiting the Sandhills area.
