Detailed description of Lochmere Golf Club

Lochmere Golf Club is a Semi-Private 18 hole golf course located in Cary, North Carolina.

Lochmere Golf Club opened for play in 1985. The course was designed by Gene Hamm.

Although bordered by housing, the course has a secluded look and feel. The course has tight, tree-lined fairways and small greens that are heavily guarded by bunkers. While the mature tree lined fairways and bunkers provide many challenges, the presence of water on nearly every hole is the most dominant obstacle throughout the golf course. The nearby Swift Creek supplies the abundant water hazards. Straight hitters will work their way through this relatively short course fairly painlessly, but the course will swallow wayward shots.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,627 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,904 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 9, a par-5 that plays to 558 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 11, a par-3 that plays to 164 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 8, a 445 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 11, a 164 yard par-3.

Since being purchased by ClubCorp (owners of Pinehurst Resort, just one hour south), Lochmere Golf Club has seen significant upgrades. A course that was formerly considered swampy even in the dry season, you can now drive your carts across fairways after normal rainfall without damaging the course. New greens and general conditioning have changed many local's minds about this course.

Visiting the area for a wedding, played here Friday, Oct 21, 2016, an important date, since it is only about ten days after Hurricane Matthew passed through the area, dumping FEET of rain, and flooding much of the course. To management's credit, they managed to restore the course to minimal playability, despite the damages caused (flooding destroyed the sprinkler control system, wind and rain impacted vegetation, with limbs, leaves, and even whole trees downed). Surprisingly, greens were in excellent shape, fairways not so much.

Layout itself is pretty challenging, especially for us old guys, with lotsa water to contend with, including some not readily visible from the fairway: moral of that story, look at the scorecard picture!

I have played a number of courses in the area, and this is fairly typical. Nothing too extreme, nothing super memorable, just a nice test of golf. Staff we encountered were uniformly positive and welcoming, and notably appreciated our patronage. I recommend.

Would travel: 20-30 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area

A decent course for the cost. Probably the course I've played the most in the past year, but only because of convenience. Provides decent challenge. Tee boxes are in bad shape as of 8/2013. Greens and bunkers are in excellent condition, though.

Would travel: 10-20 Miles, Not Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Better courses for less nearby, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Greens were in really bad shape, bumpy and hard to roll a true putt. Course was pretty but fairways could use some work as well. All in all an average outing for a good practice round.

Bottom line: I would play again, Better courses for less nearby

Good challenging course. Not sure how much longer they will hang onto their bent grass greens. Lots of poa annua. It is fun to play as long as they haven't had a lot of rain recently. Fairly flat course.

I would play it again because of convenience and friends who are members there, but otherwise I think there are much better courses in the area.

Hard to compare it to other courses as it's the first one I've plaued in 18 years but the greens were in poor shape on some holes and the fairways left something to be desired as well. It was flat but a bit of a challenge with hole and hazard placement.

The greens need some serious attention. They are far too poorly conditioned for the time of year, leading to slow putting.
