Detailed description of Detwiler Golf Club

Detwiler Golf Club is a Public 18 hole golf course located in Toledo, Ohio, just north of downtown adjoining Bayview Park.

Detwiler Golf Club opened for play in 1971. The course was designed by Arthur Hills.

This flat course is known for its difficult par 3's, some measuring up to 210 yards. There are water hazards that come into play at least four times. The signature hole is #11, a 190-yard, par 3, featuring a shallow green with water to the left. This is a parkland style course with tree lined fairways, well bunkered, and water hazards. From the tips, it's 6497 yards. Originally the land was inhabited by the Ottawa and Pottawatamis Indian tribes. Detwiler Park Golf Course is a modern day layout on 177 rolling acres with four sets of tees, beautiful mature trees and large plush greens. Its location along the Maumee Bay and adjacent to Point Place lighthouse give the property a distinct lakeside feel.

Par for the course is 71. From the back tees the course plays to 6,497 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 5,137 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 14, a par-5 that plays to 530 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 17, a par-3 that plays to 144 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 4, a 407 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 15, a 172 yard par-3.

$16 (cart included), played on Thursday, September 2020 at 11:15 AM

Played only nine (9) holes earlier at Ottawa Park GC so I decided to drive by this 1971 Arthur Hills design and see what I could play.

The Front ( 3,133yds / Par 35) was just finishing up a Senior Scramble so I paid $18 for 9 holes and cart and took off. The #1 371yd Par 4 is a nice straightway open to get you warmed up. The fairway showed water damage, so winter rules were invoked. Raised fast and hard green made the trip worthwhile. The #2 190yd Par 3 has water on the LH side right up to the raised green and the front trap has gone to seed, which was too bad. The #3 Par 4 at 375yds Hcp 4 was fairly open but the scattered trees made it look tighter than it was. The #4 Par 4 is 410yds and parallels #3 being straightaway to a raised green and RH greenside sand trap. The #5 is a sweeping left 526yd Par 5 that has a huge tree on the inside corner blocking your 2nd shot towards the green. Stay to the right here and it's wide open but don't go long to the green or OB awaits you. The #7 is a slightly uphill 180yd Par 3 with swamp LH, brush RH side, and a very large soft green waiting for your impending arrival. The #7 is their Par 4 Hcp 2 hole and at 425yds it protects itself by sweeping right uphill to a green tucked behind two (2) front traps. Number 8 hole is a short 154yd Hcp 18 Par 3 to a raised green that is again, tucked behind a large RH trap which is very friendly to a cut shot approach. Finishing up with a 502yd narrow Par 5 that has a very elevated green tucked again, you guessed it, a large trap.

I enjoyed this 1971 Arthur Hills layout and only wished fairway conditions (many bad spots) could have matched the greens as they were immaculate. The Back 9 (3,487yds / Par 36) plays longer with water on six (6) holes that follow a meandering pond or stream. With the Back 9 locked down with the Senior Scramble, I decided to call it quits and return later to enjoy the complete 6,620yd / 71.0 / 118 with better conditions as originally designed. Enjoyed shooting 38 w/ 17 putts in 1.5hrs until catching the tail end of the Seniors outing.
