Bala Golf Club, is a Private, 18 hole golf course located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Bala is the closest private golf club to Center City Philadelphia
Bala Golf Course first opened for play in 1901.That site, laid out by Willie Tucker, provided the club members with a 9 hole, 2,747 yard course. Although the original course was highly regarded, the pressure to go to an 18 hole course convinced the membership to act, and, in 1923, William S. Flynn was brought in to renovate the course. Flynn's challenge was to build nine additional holes, fold them into the existing design, and fit it all into the available acreage. He succeeded admirably.
The course was built on rolling terrain. The course challenges you with small greens, deep bunkers, and water on four holes.
Par for the course is 68. From the back tees the course plays to 5,306 yards. From the forward tees the course measures 4,213 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 10, the only par-5, it plays to 487 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 16, a par-3 that plays to 97 yards from the back tees.
Watch out for # 7, a 380 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 16, the 97 yard par-3.
Although short by today's standards, Bala continues to challenge it's membership by placing a premium on sound strategy and skillful shot-making.
