Detailed description of Whispering Firs Golf Club

Whispering Firs Golf Club is a Military 18 hole golf course located in Joint Base Lewis-McChord Field, Washington. The base was previously named McChord Air Force Base.

The golf course at Whispering Firs Golf Club first opened for play in 1961. The course was designed by Bob E. Baldock.

This challenging military course has a reputation for being well manicured. It has tree-lined fairways, heavy rough, and small greens. Most holes have a tendency to play very tight and may require a long iron off the tee rather than a driver. Water hazards come into play on several holes.

Par for the course is 72. From the back tees, the course plays to 6646 yards. The course rating is 71.8 with a slope rating of 122. From the forward tees, the course measures 5818 yards. The longest hole on the course is # 11, a par-5 that plays to 531 yards. The shortest hole on the course is # 5, a par-3 that plays to 166 yards from the back tees.

Watch out for # 6, a 468 yard par-4 challenge and the #1 handicap hole on the course. The easiest hole is # 12, a 171 yard par-3.

Authorized Users are Active Duty and Retired military, Reservists, DOD employees working at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, retired DOD civilians their respective dependents and their guests. Guests must be accompanied by a military member in order to play the course.

This course has made a remarkable comeback by hiring new superintendent, Jim Smith. The greens are the best they have been in the last 20 years. The natural grasses have been allowed to grow higher near the tree lines and new tee boxes hav3 been added If you haven't played Whispering Firs in awhile then come on out and see us!

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Better courses for less nearby, Bargain priced based on quality and competitive area pricing

Whispering Firs Golf Course on McChord AFB is a great secret to most civilians who do not have military friends. It is a private military course with an excellent and tough layout which by all accounts is tougher than Eagles Pride, its sister course at Ft. Lewis. Tight fairways, great bunkering and undulating greens are the norm here and it doesn't seem to get easier the more you play it. Great food at Habanero's Resturant with a great staff and adequate pro shop. If you are lucky enough to play this course you will want to come back!
