San Diego is wonderful. Residents rave about the weather. Even in December, San Diego’s coldest month, the average low is only 49 and the high is 66. August is the hottest month, with an average low of 67 and an average high of 77. Wow, this sure sounds like perfect golf weather to me.
In addition to the weather, the area is blessed with a beautiful Pacific Ocean coastline, miles of beaches, professional baseball and football, wonderful restaurants, parks, a world-famous zoo, a beautiful harbor with a decommissioned aircraft carrier as a tourist attraction. The nightlife and entertainment is world class. As I said, San Diego is wonderful.
And it is particularly delightful for a golfer. Balboa Park Municipal Golf Course, a 27-hole facility, sits in the middle of San Diego. Within 10 miles of Balboa Park Municipal, are 16 other golf courses, within 20 miles are 37, and within 40 miles are almost 90 golf courses.
Just 14 miles distant, just north of La Jolla, you will find the best known of the area courses, Torrey Pines. This municipal facility offers two outstanding courses perched on the bluffs of Torrey Pines State Park overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Torrey Pines plays host annually to the PGA Tour's Farmers Insurance Open.
Torrey Pines offers a great value if you have a San Diego city resident card ($61 for the South course and $40 for the North course on weekdays; $76 and $50 on weekends). Non-residents pay a premium for green fees ($183 for South, $100 for North on weekdays; $229 and $125 on weekends). But the views are priceless... if you can get a tee time.
The variety of courses available makes San Diego a golf dream. Within just 40 miles courses vary from mountain to oceanfront, to desert settings. Courses range from world-class municipal offerings to resort courses and one of everyone’s favorite, Barona Creek, an Indian reservation course and one of the finest casino courses in the United States.
With a wide range of price points, a variety of course styles and great nightlife, San Diego has everything a golfer could want.
