New Orleans, The Big Easy, is the largest city in Louisiana. Located on The Mississippi River, New Orleans is steeped in a tradition of diverse culture. From the French Quarter to Mardi Gras, Casino gambling, jazz bands randomly playing in the streets, exotic cuisine, and drive-through daiquiri stores, this is a city that marches to its rhythm and has a good time in the process.
As you would expect, a town built for play has its share of golf courses. Golf in New Orleans was dealt a blow by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. At the time of the hurricane, New Orleans proper had 12 golf courses. Three courses at Bayou Oaks and two at Eastover Country Club never reopened after the hurricane. A 6th course, Brechtel Memorial Park Municipal Golf Course closed in 2011 cutting the number of New Orleans proper golf courses from 12 in 2005 to 6 in 2011.
The good news, 1n 2017 Bayou Oaks opened a new multi-million-dollar championship golf course.
Additional good news is that some true gems remain. They include:
Lakewood Country Club, a former private, turned public, hosted the PGA from 1963-88.
English Turn Golf & Country Club, a Jack Nicklaus-designed private course.
TPC of Louisiana (Avondale, Louisiana), current home of the Zurich Classic, designed by Pete Dye.
The executive length Golf Club at Audubon Park (par 62, 4,220 yards).
