"We were walking the course on a cart path only day. The course was somewhat soft, due to the previous days rain. Larry's drive embedded half way up the approach slope to the par-3 green. Larry wanted to lift and clean his ball and take a free drop. Scott, another member of the foursome said heck no, he specifically recalled reading a rule prohibiting relief for a ball in a pitch mark. Was Larry entitled to relief? What is the correct ruling?"

A. Assuming that Larry did not need to lift the ball for identification, no, he can not lift the ball, and even if lifted for identification, he could not clean the ball. The old play the ball as it lies rule pertains.

B. Scott is half way correct, there is no relief if your ball is in a pitch-mark that was not of your making...a ball mark made by another golfer. But that does not pertain in this instance.

C. Yes Larry is entitled to relief. Larry does not have to play his ball as it lies. His ball was embedded in its' own pitch mark. Larry can lift, clean, and drop the ball without penalty.
