Our group of sixteen (16) picked the Garland courses (all 4) to play this weekend and I'm told , "You ain't seen nothing yet!" When I asked if it was challenging. Luckily we warmed up on "The Loon GC" in Gaylord, MI (Butch Harmon design) yesterday to ready ourselfs for tightness and water we'll face here at Garland. Starting out on the Monarch (Ron Otto 1988 design) they have five (5) tees from Black's @ 7,203yds / 75.0 / 145 down to Reds @ 4,904yds / 69.0 / 121 for a Par 36/36 layout. This is a real great conditioned, beautiful treelined, swamp/water bordered, slight doglegs and tough to hit tricky greens of a track I've seen.....in a while. It rained last night so the fairways/greens were soft but the greens still were rolling 9-10 and hard to read breaks. Starting out on their #1 hole a Par 4 playing 427yds from the Blues lived up to its Hcp 1 by having a hidden 100yd carry pond in front of the green......surprise !! Wasting no time #2 is a Hcp 3 at 383yd Par 4 with water down the LH side to a small elevated green. The #8 Par 5 is a sweeping left and narrow 520yds that has a wide hidden elevated green with front traps but plays friendly. The Back 9 starts out with a 551yd Par 5 with the last 200yds in, very narrow to a raised green. The #13 Par 4 at 407yds protects its Hcp2 by having water LH side "Tee to Green" and narrow. I'm looking forward to returning and maybe playing from the Gold tees @ 5,609yds / 68.0 / 118 so I can hit the safe target areas on those hidden greens with higher lofted clubs. Ended up shooting 45/45 w/38putts as finding the hole was a real problem today. This is a real great course and conditions BUT playing from the correct tees can make it MUCH more enjoyable.
Would travel: 120-300 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Better than average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing, Ranks with the best in this price level
Condition of Course, Price, Food/ Bar facilities, Difficulty, Ambiance, Staff, Pro Shop, Layout, No Houses on Course, Clubhouse
