I played the Country Club Of Whispering Pines East Course on Valentine's Day, 2012, during our annual retreat from the northern winter. Very nice course, with country club amenities and service. East course has bermuda everywhere, except the bent grass greens, so it's all pretty much beige at this time of year. West course is overseeded with winter rye, so there is a better contrast with the surroundings. The East course is fairly flat, with some modest elevation change, and a couple of really dramatic holes which take advantage of the few hills. Not too much water or sand, and what there is is reasonable and avoidable. Greens are pretty large, and most are modestly sloped, with very few huge undulations. We thought that some of the yardages were actually longer than shown on the scorecard and from the markers, but overall, it's a fair test of one's game.

Course is walkable for those in good shape: perhaps not for us seniors! The houses adjacent to the course are not intrusive, all of them sitting well back from the playing area. Oh yeah, there is not a railroad tie in sight, anywhere!! (Take that, Pete Dye...)

Our only piddling negative is that some of the cart paths are in poor shape, and need to be redone in the next few years. This course is about mid-grade for the Pinehurst area, but would be an A-level in most other areas of the country.

Staff we met were very cordial and appreciated our business, and so did a couple of the members we encountered. Pro shop is nicely stocked with logo merchandise, and the restaurant/bar is top notch. We recommend both courses at this club.

Would travel: 30-60 Miles, Vacation Worthy
Bottom line: I would play again, Average course for the area, Fair priced based on quality and competitive area pricing
